Description Introducing the new Challenge Class 400ton Subsidized Merchant (WIP) for the current THE OLD SHIP IS NEW CHALLENGE!! [link] of TheTravellerGroup [link] here on DeviantArt. It’s class name is also an homage to the Challenge Mag that supported my Traveller needs during my active RPGing years.

It is basically a variant of my model [link] of the Type R Subsidized Merchant found in the Judges Guild Starships and Spacecraft Booklet 1 (p. 13).

I chose the design as it is not widely known or at least not exposed to the limit, so I might get a way with a resemblance to the original design and still have a different looking craft.

Next to that there are stilistic resemblances to a few well known designs as for example the Close Escort (forward hull crosssection), Far Trader (aft wing) and Subsidized Merchant (general visual layout).

The image shows the current modelling state of the 400ton Challenge Class Fat Trader especially modelled for this challenge.

I plan to upgrade the model with details and textures and probably add a decent scene setup (now that I noticed *Arcas-Art's stock space backgrounds).

There are a few things that will likely change until the project is finished. Most notably the turrets in relation to the canards and the cargo bay hatches.

As I found a few things I don't like about de JG design, I will likely modify the deck plan too. Have to anyway as this variant is shorter but wider in comparison to the JG Type R.

C&C welcome, of course.

Minor Edit 1: Changed window configuration and airlock position. Thanks to Arcas for the idea to change the windows. Looks more Traveller-like now.

Minor Edit 2: Higher resolution render. Optimised and cleaned up the mesh. Cockpit room box added as viewblock (otherwise the interior would show through). Figures now wear texture.

Another Edit: Cargo bay doors plus interior block out. Open Airlock hatch and Mr. "DefaultGuy" roaming about the ship.

HA! That's pretty cool. Those Judge's Guild ships were like the first ship plan set for the game, so they kind of took a different direction... but this kinda works. For my taste the only way to make it better would be to put more of a Bil Keith style recessed cockpit window on it. Then you'd have a solid winner.

Great subject, my friend!

Thanks a lot and a great idea.
I will likely play a bit with the windows tonight and update the image as I go along.

I stumbled over the JG plans only when MWM pointed me to it when I launched Traveller Illustrated in 2010. A pity that I hadn't noticed these plans earlier.

It's pretty nostalgic to see 'em again I've still got them in my library.... somewhere.... but it's literally been decades since I even thought much about 'em.

Would this design include a 20-ton launch?

The original design included a lifeboat - which I suspect to be at around 10 tons.
I am not sure if I fully redesign the vessel. I have designed my last Traveller ship in the late 80ies, so I'm a bit off the topic, atm.

A 20ton launch or perhaps a variant of my Patrol Boat [link] would be nice though.

A couple of the 'classic' designs have long annoyed me, with a launch or a shuttle riding on the outside of the hull. I guess someone was channeling the old 747 'piggy-back' flights for the space shuttle.

Then again, there's no way the pinnace with the swing-wing feature would fit inside a 400-ton hull. Go figure.

Well I checked on the Judges Guild (JG) lifeboat - which is a tubular 20ton design standard (there are a few designs on CotI from 5 to 25 tons) - and the JG Subsidized Merchant on which this vessel is partly based carries it's lifeboat midships on the lower deck between the cargo bays with a ventral hangar bay door. That might also work for this design. I made a 20ton variant of the Versiil Class patrol boat (the Mk.II) which might also fit. I think I will try out some variations.

Still a nice simple design...
