Description
Wanted to do this ship for a while. But time aint plenty these days.Based on a drawing by Arcas-Art [link]
There's work to do but it's taking good shape I think.
BTW: Is there anybody here who can point me to a view of the ship's stern?
New updates will follow soon.
Update2:
Cargobay door now resembles a roll up gate. The crew hatch, cockpit windows and lounge window now also feature rounded corners but require more tweaking. The gap in the top antenna pod is closed. The small window and keypad next to the crew hatch have been added, the ACS-Thrusters, the sensor bulges beneath the crew hatch and other doodads were added.
I added the top-down silouette of the 3D model so perhaps that helps on my last comment below (the most important part of that follows here):
Question:
Looking at the various deckplans (unfortunately not of the Garu Class with side cargo airlocks) I found using Google I have the impression the bow section on my model is too streched and the stern a bit too short.
However my attempts at scaling these portions to fit any deckplans destroyed the similarity to Rob's drawing which is the reason I wanted to model the ship.
So probably I need to do my own Deckplan to make things fit.
I think most deck plans are tailored to fit the 1.5m grid and paper formats regardless of the artists visualization.
I'm truly interested what you Traveller folks think:
Stick to a plan or to a visual depiction of a vessel?
(sorry for spamming youir watch with this WIP)

I found this possibly too late having bugged Arcas for a Marave for months.
Only other 3D Marava I know off is this one: www.freelancetraveller.com/fea…
Maybe it will be of help.

Ah, magmagmag's model. Cool ship. Thanks for pointing me to her again. There are a few others actually. But leaving the classic shape of the Marava out, there is Ian Steeds Osprey: biomassart.wordpress.com/2012/…
The classic shape of the Marava had been addressed in 3D too:
Jesse DeGraff did one (but his site is defunct as of lately) cdn.obsidianportal.com/assets/…
The late Andrew Boulton (site also defunct) did one very detailed model: 7chan.org/tg/src/134953594119.… which also had a first version www.cix.co.uk/~fubar/Traveller…
Cheers Mirco

I think it's getting closer to what Drell-7 and Arcas had in mind when designing the ship.

Hm. The nose protrusions look to be the wrong shape, as seen from above. If you look at the shape as outlines in Traders and Gunboats, that's the shape we were shooting for in that area.
Did you find that tail view? From the top she feels a bit square and heavy back there... but I can't say much more w/o digging out all the old images myself and they're kinda packed away, at the moment.

Yes. You're probably right with the nose. I just located the deckplans on the Internet a few days ago. Everything else was modeled from your single illustration. I'll look into Traders and Gunboats for further reference.
She has no backside yet. So she's not looking at all there you might say.
I dont have MT Journal 4 which you suggested. A friend was quite sure this book has the back of a Fat Trader and couldn't remember the tail of the Marava. But I can't say anything pro or con. No idea how she's ought to look from her behind except for nicely shaped and not square...

I think you do have it, but I'll shoot it anyway. Your help on this is so much appreciated, Rob. Thank you
Well now - it seems - I only have to figure out how to get a roughly 475 ton (and some) tons deckplan to around 200 tons while maintaining the overall looks of this nice ship.
Note is on it's way

IMHO these sorts of ships would be built over many years, by multiple manufacturers. Variations are part of the game. Do what is right for you, put a model year and a manufacturer on it, and don't worry about what other drawings look like, because those were a different model year, and maybe even a different manufacturer.

riftroamer In reply to Deltigar [2013-07-14 09:37:35 +0000 UTC]
Absolutely. There should be thousands of slight variations of these vessels (not this single one, but when looking at any of the standard ships). They are built to the same specs but can look differently or vaguely similar IMTU. So I agree with you on this
I think my universal modeling aproach is similar prototype model building (i.e. modelling a specific ship using prototype illustrations), like in model railroading, where I used to model scale locomotives after prototype photographs.
I normally come to my senses quick enough to realize when a model looks "good enough" and perhaps it is about time with this one.
So thanks for your comment. That's exactly the input I had hoped to get

BTW: I had the same problems with the patrol cruiser which is way longer than on any deckplan but still matching the internal volume. I think most deck plans are tailored to fit the 1.5m grid and paper formats regardless of the artists visualization.

Oh yeah. I'd actually like to have a scale model... Or the real thing...
But seriously, when it's ready and I had the chance to use it in a nice image, there's a good chance for others to play with it. It's not decied at this moment...
Thanks for expressing your interest.

Thanks, John. This seems to be one of those models, that induce the urge to make it a tiny bit better with each little session I can spare to work on it. Like a vehicle gaining momentum after passing the top of the hill running downwards again. I need to watch the direction it's going, so I won't overdo it.

Should I remove the "We brake for nobody" Sticker from the back of the "roll-bar"?

Looks wonderful. Might I make one suggestion? Change the roll-up door to an Iris hatch. That would fit the docking ring shape and look very cool.

riftroamer In reply to AbaKon [2013-07-09 13:21:00 +0000 UTC]
Nice suggestion, William. Actually I'm not a big fan of the iris hatches, but I do add them as they are pretty iconic for Traveller. In this case only the crew hatch is an Iris hatch (according to Rob Caswell's drawing).
That being said, the ring structure of the cargo airlock practically begs for an Iris hatch, so I may well do a version with another hatch syle.
Modeled Iris hatches are a b**ch to animate (at least for me), so I have to think about modelling it (as opposed to just texturing it).

Ah, those insets... They are also visible on the sides of the Free Trader drawing Rob Caswell made for the Starship Operator's Manual [link] . So far - and to my limited knowledge - no one bothered to model these. Perhaps it's advisable to operate your starship with covering panels anyway
Roll-Bar, eh? I like the mental image... What are these wings called anyway?
