Description For your steampunk pleasure, perhaps?

Alright, for those that saw the crane bay shot, you can see the crane in this picture, down towards the end there. It travels back and forth along the building on those massive red I-beams.

Now to explain what you see.. those big silver pipe ducts you see coming in are carrying steam. This is not the steam that comes off your spagetti, this is kill-you-right-now steam. The big white metal circles are the turbine housing itself, you're seeing the low-pressure turbines from this angle. On the left you can see a giant tank the steam lines are coming from, that's an MSR (Main Steam Reheater), basically the steam looses umph and gets wet after the high-pressure turbine, so you bounce it through the MSR then slam it to the low pressure turbines. Wet steam is bad business for turbines.

Those things that look like fire extinguishers are, in fact, fire extinguishers. They aren't your conventional extinguishers, though, that's Purple K . Purple K is only seen on the turbine decks in this plant, because it's kept on hand to handle generator fires.

Man, I wish I had more turbine shots. I'm sorry these are as bad of quality as they are! My digital camera gave its all.

Here's the deal. If you use this, let me know please, and no commercial applications without permission. Please do not use this image for anti-nuclear purposes.

Thanks for the fav! I have a stock account here: [link]

As for the plant, it's on wiki: [link]

Both units are over a thousand megawatts.

Ahhhh!
DC Cook...I thought that name sounded familar.

My dad works for AEP...thats where I heard of it. I went to school to become a power plant operator but due to the economy...nothing.

The pictures of the control run simulator. VERY nice. I only got to use a simulated control room on a computer. Great stuff BTW.

Out of curiosity, but how did you obtain permission?

I worked at Cook in-house for a while and they had no problem with me having a camera. I had a class that went to the Palisades simulator, and it was the same situation, we all had cameras in that case.

This is so cool. I'm just going to add this to my favorites; I have nothing to use it for. I've always been fascinated by power plants and heavy industrial machinery. To imagine how much power is being created by those turbines....

You're quite welcome. Its neat when people share their pictures of places that most of us will never get to see, whether its industrial settings or faraway places.
