Description Part 2, 3 & 4

I had some requests while I was at SMASH for some new tutorials ...and wow, it's been about five years since the last one! I did a couple of guest lectures at ECU these past two weeks, so it seems like a good opportunity to use my examples from that for a new tutorial.

Normally I draw on paper for these first steps, but as this painting was done for a live lecture, it's drawn in Photoshop.

I paint in so many different styles these days, but this would be the closest thing I have to a 'style' that I default to. If you have any questions, or requests for other topics, feel free to ask below.

I keep seeing action lines and they look dumber every time. Those arbitrary lines don't represent anything, not even the center of balance, you would have gotten the exact same result without drawing any action lines.

Drawing a spine line and bone lines is a good idea, but action lines are the most counter-productive relic of art education. Don't confuse yourself with random lines, build poses based on balance, bones, muscle, and intent.

Action lines do represent intent - here I'm using the horizontal action line to get the flow of the arm holding the arrow. I do also consider balance, bones and muscle here, but didn't go into it in detail. Use of action lines isn't some fringe technique, it's used by animators and artists in a variety of careers. If it weren't useful, we wouldn't do it!

Look, what works for one artist will not necessarily work for another, but don't discount the use of a technique just because it didn't work for you personally.
