Description For more photos of the props/armour I've textured, and to see the shuriken in use, take a look through my Wai-con photos (My sister and I are cosplaying FFVII Yuffie & Tifa and their AC versions). [link]

For tutorials on making the props & armour, I recommend Amethyst Angel's tutorials: [link] She does some amazing stuff!

Wow, that's an awesome painting effect! I think I'll have to try that on some of my props that don't see much action (some of my props, like my favorite keyblades, have gotten that way naturally from using them at too many cons xD)
Great tutorial~!

Damn, that's some sick good prop paint job, right there!
Still, I prefer the real hardware, myself.

Crazy thing is, while that "slightly tarnished" look does help to make it look more realistic, it's not something that is usually appreciated by owners of real weapons. Reason being -and I'm talking from personal experience here- that weapons looking like that have a tendency to go from *slightly* tarnished to REALLY tanished pretty fast, even if they never see real use. Which is why you'll want to polish them up from time to time, and preferably keep them oiled up.

*realises that no one cares*

Er, anyway, great job.

No no, some people do care. I was about to post that same general comemnt myself, especially commenting on sword users, BUT as this is a shuriken it kinda fits as the more rust, muck and dirt wass on one the better chance it had of actually doing conciderable or permanent damage to anyone it was used on ... Tetanus being a good culprit.

RelativelyBest In reply to tgnrogue [2006-12-14 10:46:03 +0000 UTC]

Point, though that's true for most edged weapons. Also, pretty much any wound had a nasty tendecy to get infected in ye olde days of no antiseptics.
And honestly, if I got hit by a giant shuriken with foot-long blades, hurled by a blatantly superhuman teenage ninja girl, I don't think tetanus would be my primary concern.

tgnrogue In reply to RelativelyBest [2006-12-14 13:28:45 +0000 UTC]

Haha, ahh yes very true, and well as for the infection a rusted surface has more places for the bacteria to actually hide lol, thus the infection being more likely than if it was a nice new, recently polished and oiled weapon .... and as for the "giant shuriken with foot-long blades, hurled by a blatantly superhuman teenage ninja girl" thats just typical media, they were more often than not used as distractions rather than actual weapons the shuriken would be the least of your worries ... the sword/knife/dagger going into you being wielded by a superhuman teenage ninja girl after you concentrate on getting ouf of the way of the giant shuriken with foot-long blades would be the main concern for me lol.

Or getting hit by an energy blast the size of a freaking train. (All Creation.)

Yuffie had some pretty un-ninja like limit breaks, come to think of it.

If I carried something like that into AE, I'd get it taken away, because it looks too real.

Those coventioner people are pussies. Sheesh.

But, just for kicks, I'm going to follow your suggestions, and make a kick-ass weapon, and take it in with me anyway. ^^

Cyber-Gh0st [2006-12-13 20:31:56 +0000 UTC]

That's really good. Do you think it would work on something larger? Like full plate metal armor? I'm trying to finish up my Lodoss Parn armor and I'm not geting it to look quite right with the painting.

👍: 0 âĐ: 1

Risachantag In reply to Cyber-Gh0st [2006-12-14 10:14:08 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I imagine it would work with any surfaces that need to look like tarnished metal.

Risachantag In reply to LILYCHANGLFMA [2006-12-14 10:15:24 +0000 UTC]

...with a camera. You point it at things and press the button. Nothing to it, honestly.

LILYCHANGLFMA In reply to Risachantag [2006-12-14 10:39:50 +0000 UTC]

... I know that. I meant did you have someone take the picture for you? Wouldn't it be hard to take the picture while painting it?

👍: 0 âĐ: 1

Risachantag In reply to LILYCHANGLFMA [2006-12-14 11:43:53 +0000 UTC]

No, I just did it myself, with the brush in one hand and the camera in the other when I needed it.

Wow~! Absolutel fantastic piece of work there ^___ _^ I'm a fan of prop reproductions, and I love stuff like this. One of these days, I still wanna make a convincing foam-core Tetsusaiga and Buster Sword set. Wood would be too unwieldy and impractical, so I figure foam with a solid (maybe sheet plastic or balsa wood) outer layer would be idea. 'Course, that'd work for the flatness of the Buster Sword, but the curve of the Tetsusaiga would be another story...

Nice tutorial--very easy to understand. You did an excellent job on this shuriken. If I ever cosplay as someone who has a weapon, I'll be sure to keep this in mind (normally I do Yu-Gi-Oh! cosplays, so I might never have the chance...). I'm sure that this will help many cosplayers!
