Description Part One

If you have questions, I'll do my best to answer them, but here's a couple of FAQs from part 1.

Q: Will you make these commercially?
A: No, I don't do commissions for cosplay, and as she took 2 months to make, I don't even want to put a price on the hours involved.

Q: How much were the materials?
A: I used two kinds of fur, one was $60/metre and one was $45/metre. The jaw set was $10...but with $40 shipping! The wire probably came to around $30-40, foam around $30-40, paper clay was about $50 and the perspex was free from a art supplies recycler. I already had the paints and markers. All in all, she cost around $250-300 in materials.

Q: Where can I get _____?
A: My materials were from my local fabric store, hardware store, art supplies recycler and the internet. Check around your local area or try a online search.

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I think I will use this partly to build my next lifesized wolf.

Amazing, really amazing!
I would love to see a video of how you'd operate her.

Omg, you are my hero. I started a project very similar to this earlier, but I had to stop because I didn't have access to the right materials. I got about as far as the skull and skeleton, and was forced to retire. Fast forward to the present and I'm working on the head base for another as we speak (it's going to be a more traditional puppet so I have a more manageable learning experience). This tutorial is sooooooooooooooooo amazingly helpful, you have no idea. Thank you so much for sharing your information!

About how much (length) fabric did you have to use for this?

is it possible to make this kind of puppet for a small animal such as a mongoose? or perhaps a cobra? I am in charge of making puppets for our theater UIL tournament one act and our play is the "rikki tikki tavi" play and we want to have the animals as puppets, as soon as i came across this i thought it would be perfect for some of the characters.

Sure, it'd probably be easier to make smaller animals, as reaching all the controls inside Amaterasu and supporting her weight is made harder by her size. I doubt this would work for a cobra though, for that I'd recommend making joints like in those cheap plastic snakes (this sort of thing: [link] )

I was lucky, and got some very nice fur quite cheaply, but even so, the raw materials cost around $300 (if I hadn't gotten the fur discounted, probably $500). Two months of long days working on her though, that *would* probably have cost $10000 if I were making one for someone else!

yexe In reply to Risachantag [2012-11-02 10:46:03 +0000 UTC]

Woah. Seems like it was quite hard. My brain just cannot cope with me trying to make stuff like this so i only get up to ΒΌ before something else distracts me. Where is the best place to start?
(I am british so materials may be a little tricky)

Hrm, I always find it helps to have a deadline with long projects (in my case, this was for a cosplay competition). Materials should be easier for you than they were for me! I live in Perth, Australia (also known as "The most isolated capital city in the world").

Hey fellow Perthie! I am another Perthie, trying to make puppets for a production I am hoping to have up this year, and I was wondering about where you got the joints cut in Perth?
There is a place in Perth that can do that?! WHAT?!

What an amazing puppet, what an amazing tutorial, you have wonderful skills, I have had a blast looking through your gallery.

The place that helped me was the Perth Artifactory: [link] They're a hacker/maker space in Osbourne Park, and do all sorts of projects, including art, audio, electronics and 3D printing. If you're shy, they usually have open days and other general public welcome events each month. Check the facebook page for more details: [link]

I never knew they existed in this fine city! I went the the "museum of natural history" today to pick up some fox and dog casts, and a heart mould (my poor house mates!), so much stuff hiding here in Perth! Thank you for the advice.

I just want to say thank you and well done. You have achieved for yourself here a masterpiece that you can be proud of for years to come. And the thank you is for taking the time to document all of your steps. I'm working on a Neliel cosplay from Bleach (aka, a centaur cosplay) and I've been floundering as to how I was to go about certain steps, but thanks to several ideas from you, I think I'll be able to do this! A lot easier than anticipated, anyway. So thank you!

This is the coolest thing I have ever seen. I really wanna try making one of these, not sure how well I'll be able to do the controls though. How did you control everything? Only when sitting? Could she "walk" or did you have to carry her?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Risachantag In reply to inaligrimalkin [2012-02-04 03:00:24 +0000 UTC]

It is possible to make quadruped puppets walk, but you need two to three people operating them to do it (one for the head, one for the forelegs and one for the backlegs & tail). I've only got two hands, so she sits and stands, and I can operate either front paw or the tail at the same time as the head.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

inaligrimalkin In reply to Risachantag [2012-02-04 04:36:30 +0000 UTC]

I've decided I'm going to try and make a kitsune using your method, foxes are pretty small so I think just having the movements you had would be fine, and she'd be easy to carry. The method would be the same in a smaller scale right, or would I have to cut some of the movement options?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Risachantag In reply to inaligrimalkin [2012-02-05 04:55:21 +0000 UTC]

I'm pretty sure it'd work very much the same, as long as the head and body are big enough for your hand to work inside. Good luck!
