Basically at the start of the "New Jedi" story arc in the novels, the ending of the first book in the series had Chewbacca give his life to save Han and Leia's twins. That did it for me. So it's just one branch of the SW mythos that went in one direction, and one I don't follow.
That's why we have fanfiction. If you don't like an ending, write your own, of course! (and yeah, Chewie's still alive and kicking in my version of Star Wars fiction)
