Description
Over on the left end of the miniature subway display model I installed a "first surface" mirror to continue the miniature curved subway tunnel. There is a support post right behind the mirror and the subway platform couldn't just 'dead end' into a flat wall here so it's really common to use mirrors as an illusion to imply a miniature is larger than the space you actually have. The only real giveaway is the double arch and double fiber optic light.I installed the square floor tiles to land right at that seam so in the reflection the square floor tiles just continue uninterrupted. The guy wearing a green jacket & grey pants in the reflection is the very same guy in the brown suit reading the newspaper. All you do is just paint a different color on the opposite side of any miniature people closest to the mirror. At a glance it's implied they're just more random people on the platform so it takes the viewer a few moments to realize there's actually a mirror in there.
That dark tunnel at the far end is just a reflection of the very same dark tunnel with the headlights coming at you to the far right of the platform. Of course I didn't want it to look like two subway trains coming to the same platform from opposite directions for a head on collision!
The way I fixed that was to install the oncoming headlights so deep in the tunnel on the right that you just can't see far enough around the corner into the reflected tunnel. Double the platform and arches, double the display, but ONLY ONE subway train approaching the platform from the tunnel on the right. The best illusions are the ones that you don't even know you're looking at an illusion ...it was a really good trick
