Description
A shot from a Sacramento Zoo trip waaaaaay back in February. Another one of those looks that makes you happy for the fencing between you and your subject. One of these days, I'll post something other than a lion... One of these days...

Nice clean shot! Especially for taking it through fencing!
I was reading your exchange with about the cougars. When I visited the San Diego Zoo a long time ago, they seemed stressed to me too.

Yeah, it's unfortunate, especially as there's no great solution to the problem. I don't imagine even a zoo like San Diego has space where the animal can be kept off exhibit for long periods of time, and I wonder what sort of stress moving the animal to another zoo or sanctuary might cause. Still, it's not my job to ensure the welfare of the animals, so it's disappointing that San Diego hasn't figured something out for their mountain lions yet.

Most of the big cats seem very stressed, always pacing. The worst I see, no matter what zoo I go to, is the jaguar. Every jaguar I have ever seen is extremely nervous and pacing constantly.

Yes, I remember the pacing in particular.....
Our zoo doesn't have many big cats so they are quite chilled, believe me! And Indiana has an Exotic Feline Rescue Center which is terrific, although horrible for photography. I've managed a few shots but none are really good, due to fencing. But the cats are all well cared for and there is no signs of stress. And that's what is important. It's still a really cool place to visit!

Just barely. Cowering behind my camera and tripod really did the trick. Glad you like the shot.

What a gorgeous girl, great capture. Yes it would be scary if that was taken outside of a fence! Whenever I go to the zoo, I always enjoy the cougars because, unlike the other big cats, they will engage with people. They will come right up to the glass and stare right at you. They especially enjoy watching small children, and I have seen cougars charge from the opposite end of their enclosure at small children walking by or away from their pen.

That's good that you have such interactive cougars at your zoo. I haven't seen too awful many of them myself, but the one that I saw when I visited the San Diego Zoo has an intense fear of wheelchairs, basically flips out whenever she sees one, and at a zoo as jam packed with people as San Diego's, that's not a great situation. When I visited, she had a scrape on her nose and was drooling profusely -- apparently there had been a person in a wheelchair about 15 minutes earlier. Kinda sad to see. I'd pay good money to switch out her chair phobia for a desire to charge small children.

Aw, that's so sad. I wonder what made her afraid of wheelchairs. Poor kitty, that constant stress is really bad for their immune system and digestive system. I know cheetahs in captivity can get stomach ulcers and intestinal cancer from constant stress, I hope she will be okay. They should take her off display and send her to a wildlife refuge where she won't have to worry about wheelchairs. The zoo where the interactive cougars live is the Houston Zoo, they are very fun to watch!
