As my Father would have said "This is not a gripe nor a growl, but just a question". What I wonder about is if there was a second docking collier/hatch/core somewhere on Discovery One? The Orion-III seems to have a typical aircraft hatch. It would have to be able to dock like the Space Shuttle Orbiters do with its dorsal docking hatch. An aircraft hatch would have to mate up to a docking core similar to those on Space Station-V, as depicted in some art. Maybe this was addressed in the novel, though I do not remember.

I don't think it was ever addressed in the novel... but the novel's ships are a bit different, anyway. Honestly I'm not sure how they would have mated for passenger transferal. One option would be that they didn't and went EVA.

I will always love the design work done for 2001: A Space Odyssey. There was so much thought put into how it worked and making it as realistic as possible. Even the space toilet! The Discovery is a great design, and it really cheeses me off that Stanley Kubrick ordered all the models destroyed after filming. We'll never be able to appreciate all the work that went into them (even though the model of the Discovery surely would be sway-backed by now).

Yeah, Discovery not only endures as a great design today, but it set a new standard for Hollywood SF design. It was a landmark in many, many ways.

Love the size comparisons, angle and the 'vastness' of everything here, including the feeling that a very important and historical journey is about to take place.

Great emotional piece.

Thanks! Yeah, you don't often get to see good scale comparisons with 2001 hardware.
Thanks for chiming in - glad ya like!

What an epic picture!! That would be no detriment to the film if ever added.

Just jawdropping!

Oh man.... I'd LOVE to see a 2001 "special edition". If only Kubrick were still around to helm such a project?

Thanks! I had a lot of fun doing these 2001 subjects. It's fun to try to expand the Clarke/Kubrick vision while still staying faithful to it.

"O.K., Hal, anything we need to know before we head out?"
"Not than I can tell you, Dave."
"That's fine... why is there a water leak in your memory room?"

This is a good one, is Jupiter too far out of position for the photo?

I like 2001 in a casual way. I hardly know "all there is to know" about it, but I did really enjoy the film (after I was old enough to appreciate it, of course).

Another good one Arcass, I just wish man kind was this far along in space travel tech. I would give anything to get off this ball of mud and go explore the great beyond.

You're certainly not alone in that desire, my friend. But hey - in a few billion our component bits will be space travelers again, so there's that

Hopefully but will we remember this time when we had the desire or will the "new us" consider it the dreary grind of the norm??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobCaswell In reply to Spookiie65 [2011-04-11 18:12:11 +0000 UTC]

Well... the new us will be component atoms, so I don't think we'll really be appreciating the trip much for what it is.

But on the upside, it's real exciting to watch Space-X growing and rolling out the Falcon-9 Heavy. Woo-hoo! Saturn V life capacity, here we come!

They don't really have a relationship. They're just friends. Discovery's heart belongs to Jupiter.

I think when you respect a creation as much as I do 2001, it's hard to NOT let it show through in the work. My mind just keeps wanting to fill in the blanks of events that we KNEW had to happen, but never saw.
