Description
I just unearthed this old piece. The ship is not my design, but came from the initial release of FASA's Star Trek RPG, if I recall. Its smaller size made it an ideal choice for a small gaming group. As I was wont to do, I couldn't resist making it feel "official" - at least by measure of such things, back in the day. So I created this for it - a proper page format out of the Franz Josef Trek Tech Manual. In some ways this ship - its size and function - reminds me a bit of TOS version of DS9's Runabout. The basic shape also evokes the TOS and TAS shuttlecraft hull designs, which makes good sense for a planetary lander. If I were tackle this project today I'd probably embellish the details a bit more. I was a naive purist, back then....

Looks good to me, man. I love FASA's Star Trek, but I wanna try the new Star Trek Adventures RPG from Modiphius. I think I'll use this design like you say: as a Runabout-like ship for Starbases and colonies.
Thank you for sharing it!

I hope there is, this is a cool ship. TOS runabout but a bit beefier.

I don't know what the folks at FASA were thinking when they designed her. She definitely won't get any beauty ribbons... Is this the actual USS Dirac, or just the name of the mothership?

Starfleet is not all capital ships, remember. This one in probably comparable to an Archer class scout - or maybe something between that and a Runabout.

Love the work of Franz Joseph, and anything in his style.
Like others I can see aspects of the Vulcan Shuttle, it also puts me in mind of the Aqua-shuttle from ST:TAS.

I like this drawing. Just goes to show that the design then of the original series is just as much futuristic as ...well, I don't want to mention his "initials-verse".

A "Mission" class diplomatic courier from the FASA boxed set's adventures book! I love the Franz Josef styling you've given it; the whole feel is that of some filming model bashed together from a pair of warp nacelles off an AMT Enterprise kit and whatever they had lying around the studios back in the third season...

RobCaswell In reply to Nuclear-Fridge [2018-11-15 15:44:49 +0000 UTC]
There is a bit of kitbash feel... but not as much as we currently see. This was a time when Trek fans didn't think everything had to have a saucer! Good times....

Nuclear-Fridge In reply to RobCaswell [2018-11-19 10:42:50 +0000 UTC]
I know what you mean. The old FASA RPG was veryΒ bad for that... It seemed that almost anything Starfleet used had to have a saucer, even the designs that were supposed to be Andorian!

Wingsley [2018-11-15 05:20:54 +0000 UTC]
Dirac also looks like it could be related to the Vulcan warpsled courier vessel Spock used in TMP.
Maybe they're related.
When did you first draw this design?
π: 0 β©: 1
RobCaswell In reply to Wingsley [2018-11-15 15:45:50 +0000 UTC]
It was early 80's, though I can't put an exact date on it. It's not my design... just my own stylized execution of the ship.
