BTW- just a note:  For "standard" lighting the term "flat" light applies (or, at least, it used to).  That is when the light source is along the same line as the viewer's eyes - as if his eyes were flashlights.  Every plane facing the viewer (and the light) reflects the light; every plane turning away from it falls into shadow: so, the edges of the silhouette get darker (except where a secondary light illumines them, asy you point out).
