Can you have an unseen narrator? Since the theme is Myth/Fairy tale I thought I might have a random voice saying things like "A long time ago in a land far, far away..." and a character wondering where that voice was coming from.

You're the storyteller. It's up to you!

So if I made a Warrior who became a demon of sorts because of all the demons he fought, would he still be considered an Archetype?

RobinRone In reply to TwistedKunoichi [2011-06-14 17:49:42 +0000 UTC]

Archetypes can take any form. As long as their natures remain the same, they remain archetypes. A Shadow Warrior is a being that has been consumed by the darker side of war, hungry for bloodshed and destruction. That could be a Roman gladiator, a WWII soldier, a sadistic school girl, a rampaging robot, etc. It's up to you!

Conspiracy-Z-Cycle [2011-06-12 19:04:50 +0000 UTC]

This is more the seed of a vague idea than any actual plotted intentions, but would it be conceivable for one of my characters - the 'playable' characters, the ones chosen to help the book - to regress into an archetypal state? For example, if a character gets too lost in a story that isn't his own, he begins to lose his grasp on the plot points of his story that make him a main character, and starts to wither away to a single defining trait.

Sounds like a cool idea to me, and a very viable danger.

So, could we play archetypes as being real people who were boiled down and simplified or were they always just characters?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobinRone In reply to WarAdmiral [2011-05-24 06:06:02 +0000 UTC]

Sure. The lines between what is "real" and not are pretty blurred in the Book.

The Conjurer follows the trickster archetype, actually.

ServantofSHEVAL [2011-05-10 19:58:42 +0000 UTC]

It's pretty close to crunch-time to be asking this, but I just wanted to know... when our characters go into the book and meet these archetypes or encounter the locations that you have listed in that other section... can they see and understand the symbols which represent each one? In other words, could one of our OCs meet an NPC, say, The Warrior, and realize immediately what archetype they are, and therefore have some understanding of how to interact with them and how they might react to certain things?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobinRone In reply to ServantofSHEVAL [2011-05-11 00:41:43 +0000 UTC]

Up to you. Would it make sense for your character to know of those symbols?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ServantofSHEVAL In reply to RobinRone [2011-05-11 00:50:37 +0000 UTC]

I wasn't sure... inherently, there would be no reason for him to know... but then, my character was selected by Lady Ink, and I thought that since she likes order and categorizing things, she might be the type to assign the symbols and use them as points of reference in the first place. My character is relatively inexperienced with books and stories as well, so I thought if there was anyone who could benefit from the knowledge of them, it would be him... and if there were any characters who would understand them in the first place, it would be those chosen by Lady Ink.

RobinRone In reply to ServantofSHEVAL [2011-05-11 01:12:25 +0000 UTC]

Again, if it makes sense to you, and you can make it make sense to others, do it.

Story-of-life [2011-04-22 14:03:53 +0000 UTC]

ahh first question what does NPCs mean? and with the audition story is it only alowed to be up to when our OCs get into the realm of tbos?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobinRone In reply to Story-of-life [2011-04-22 18:15:11 +0000 UTC]

NPC stands for "Non-Player Character". IE, not your original character.

In order to audition you need to post your audition story and OC information. That's what the judges will look at to determine who will be part of the first round. Technically, even characters that don't get past the audition can still be in the realm of stories, and write Spectator Entries (entries for a round that are not judged) to that effect.

hello! i don't know if this has been asked yet, but can we have the archtypes look like/represent people our character knows (their their stories are in the book and all stories are in the book). they wouldn't be the actual people, they'd just look and act like them. is this alright? thanks!

RobinRone In reply to LoveBuddha [2011-04-15 01:38:41 +0000 UTC]

krusca [2011-03-19 23:12:13 +0000 UTC]

sooo we create our own NPCs who fit into one of these categories?
can the NPCs we create be reoccurring NPCs?
And there can be multiple different NPCs under the same archetype, right?

SkysongMA [2011-03-05 00:09:08 +0000 UTC]

Can we add our own archetypes, or are these it? (I would loooove to have a trickster archetype to play with.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobinRone In reply to SkysongMA [2011-03-05 01:00:19 +0000 UTC]

Sure. Most characters will fit in the archetypes that have been given, but if you feel like it doesn't match well enough, you are welcome to create your own. For example, a trickster archetype is essentially a type of Conjurer. "...they will use their superior intellect and knowledge to manipulate, mislead, or trick others..."

SkysongMA In reply to RobinRone [2011-03-05 13:20:35 +0000 UTC]

All right.

Generation-Facade [2011-02-23 20:53:56 +0000 UTC]

so the Archetypes are of "the book" they're not your oc them selfs right? they're characters "the book" has already?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobinRone In reply to Generation-Facade [2011-02-24 01:52:41 +0000 UTC]

Archetypes are NOT your OCs. Archetypes are part of the realm of Stories inside The Book. They are tools for you to use, NOT limits to the OC you can make.

RobinRone In reply to SoramiiANGEL [2011-02-19 00:11:27 +0000 UTC]

These look great, but I think there's been some confusion! You do NOT have to make a character that is an Archetype. If you wish to, that is a novel idea and will still be considered a valid submission, but the idea is that you make up any character from any place and they come into the Book unchanged.

SephirothsFlamedWing [2011-02-16 15:42:34 +0000 UTC]

Do the archetype symbols have any meaning, both here and in the locations? As in, should they be included in the entries, or are they just here to show the difference between the types? If they are supposed to be included, is it up to us how they are used?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobinRone In reply to SephirothsFlamedWing [2011-02-17 01:12:14 +0000 UTC]

You can choose to use them if you want. If you decide to include the symbols, how you use them is up to you.

SephirothsFlamedWing In reply to RobinRone [2011-02-18 15:03:06 +0000 UTC]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobinRone In reply to SephirothsFlamedWing [2011-02-19 00:08:59 +0000 UTC]

It is optional. These are tools for you to use, not limitations!

SephirothsFlamedWing In reply to RobinRone [2011-02-19 00:42:35 +0000 UTC]

Ok. Thank you!

One other thing I forgot to ask before- When the characters enter the book, is the time in their story still going on without them, or will it be like they never left once they return?

Sorry to keep bugging you!

RobinRone In reply to SephirothsFlamedWing [2011-02-19 04:30:46 +0000 UTC]

Your choice. Some worlds will probably keep moving as normal. Others may have different time entirely. It's your story. You tell me!

DigiDayDreamer [2011-02-15 23:59:08 +0000 UTC]

Question: it's stated that Archetypes can be in multiple forms simultaneously. But if we're allowed to change them based on our OCs' interactions, does that mean there could be like two Child forms or two Shadow Forms of an Archetype at once?

Also, will our OCs innately have knowledge about the Archetypes and Locations as they go along, like the receivers of the Book's Pages?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobinRone In reply to DigiDayDreamer [2011-02-16 00:16:59 +0000 UTC]

There are as many Archetype forms as needed based on the stories occurring.

Your OCs will not have innate knowledge of the Archetypes and Locations. Unless they are a clever English Major and figure it out on their own.

So our first part is the audition and then we're put into different groups? Is that right?
