Excellent! I'm so glad you're excited! We're all really looking forward to seeing what people do with the concept and world! It should be epic!

This is really facinating but as much as I would love to get involved I don't think I have the skills to work in a group setting and not get stuck. This is a really cool idea though.

The best part of an OCT is that you can make great friends to help you get past blocks AND a chance to practice your skills! Our main goal is to create a positive community and help storytellers grow. Don't sell yourself, or your chances, short.

Maybe I missed it, but I've looked over the entire group. Can someone explain to me what the roles of Champion of Order and Emissary of Reason are, exactly? It's rather important to my character.

RobinRone In reply to Khyansaria [2011-03-22 00:04:16 +0000 UTC]
A champion of order would be summoned by Lady Ink. She'd be looking for people to restore structure in the Book and make it less chaotic.
An emissary of reason would be summoned by Mudd. He'd be more interested in figuring out WHY the Book is destroying itself, and how to restore balance and meaning in the realm of Stories.
Exactly how you interpret those meanings into roles is up to you. There is no strict interpretation of what any OC is supposed to do.

Thanks tons!

I'd just finalized the design of my character when I reread this and realized he looked a LOT like the scarfed guy on the far right of the bottom panel. X_X
Thankfully, the resemblance is mainly in the hair department. Back to the drawing board and off to the barber shop!

RobinRone In reply to TG-Garfieldo [2011-03-07 18:42:41 +0000 UTC]
It's not the looks of your character that matters, you know. It's who your character IS that is important.
Of course, if he wants to get a hair cut, that's fine too.

TG-Garfieldo In reply to RobinRone [2011-03-08 03:57:14 +0000 UTC]
Oh, don't worry; I've given his personality and background a great deal of thought. However, since my entry is going to be in visual form, his appearance plays an important role in his overall characterization as well.

i have just realised when starting my audition, the character i am entering is a character i came up with for the fun of it and started coming up with ideas for a manga for the character. after that i decided to include the character in a fanfic i am writing, even though it is completely separate from the anime i included the character in, would i still be able to use the character?

RobinRone In reply to Ted-The-Fish [2011-03-05 01:01:17 +0000 UTC]
Yes. As long as it is your original character, and your audition takes place in your original world.

Oh my god...
The entire concept of the worlds connected by the Book is almost an exact mirror of my Otherpaths theory.
I could finally pull Jaya into an OCT!
I'll likely have no time to do it, but I want to, I so very much want to!

I will have you know that before I could go to sleep at night, I planned my audition out in my head.

So Lady Ink and Mudd can't go to different worlds now? Then how can they help some of the contestants?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
RobinRone In reply to DuskNinjaKenji [2011-02-12 15:11:42 +0000 UTC]
The Worlds are not in the book, so they can go to those freely. They just can't get into the realm of Stories, which is where they will be sending contestants. That is why you have the option of getting a gift from either Mudd or Lady Ink, as one your OC is inside the Book, they are on their own.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
DuskNinjaKenji In reply to RobinRone [2011-02-12 21:14:23 +0000 UTC]
Oh, but how do they send them to the Realm of Stories if they don't know where the book is?

DuskNinjaKenji In reply to RobinRone [2011-02-12 21:32:26 +0000 UTC]
Well okay. XD Also, is it completely necessary that one OC is in the book and where does the other go?

See the updated F.A.Q. for the answer to your first question.
As for your second, I don't think I understand. What do you mean by "the other"?

DuskNinjaKenji In reply to RobinRone [2011-02-12 21:41:42 +0000 UTC]
Well,I'm planning on entering two OCs. You said that one should be in the book and the other oc shouldn't, what happens to the other?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
RobinRone In reply to DuskNinjaKenji [2011-02-12 22:08:31 +0000 UTC]
It sounds like there is some confusion here. If you want, they can BOTH be in the book. If you want to leave one out and one in, the one outside The Book will be in their normal world. What they do from there is up to you!

RobinRone In reply to SaffyLailo [2011-02-10 14:49:52 +0000 UTC]
There's a lot of advantages to finishing things early. As judges, we also get a lot more time to spend looking at it and getting familiar with the character on their own, instead of having to compare it to 40+ all at once. I'm so glad you're excited!

The auditions will be open until mid-May, if that helps your scheduling any. Rounds will begin ~June.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
BanditRingtail3 In reply to RobinRone [2011-02-11 05:41:35 +0000 UTC]
Well, it does, somewhat. I could maybe crank out an audition within the next couple weeks, then sit on it and edit it later in the year. Finals are either in early May or June; I forget. But I think that'd work for me.
Think I'll leave Raccoon alone for this one (though I really should get him out of that cage; he doesn't belong in one), since he's still fairly new in my mind. I'll have to make sure I get a Beta to nip any Mary-Sue-itis in the bud, should I contract it. Other than that, I think I'd do okay.
Any advice on future OCT's? I figure I could use it.

Asking me for general advice is dangerous. I don't know if comments have a word limit, but I'm sure I'd find it.
Is there anything in specific you'd like my take on?

Maybe advice on how to avoid "steam-rolling" the competition in my entries. You can note me if you need a lot of space to type. Provided DA doesn't take forever to load it...

Focus on your opponent. Try to figure out what makes them interesting. Make their good traits shine, and work with their flaws. Think about how to bounce these attributes off of your own character. Consider the themes in their character history to tell us something new about your own character by playing with similarities or discrepancies.
Example: Perhaps one character has a huge family with lots of siblings, while the other is an orphan. How do they approach the idea of a family different? What might one character expect from a community or stranger that the other might not? Can that gap be bridged, or does it cause friction between them? Perhaps a flaw of the character with a huge family is they are too trusting, and the orphan has learned not to trust. How does that impact their interactions, and how is it addressed in the story? As for good traits, perhaps the character with lots of siblings is great at taking care of others, and the orphan is very independent. How can they learn from each other? How can your character grow as a person from interacting with the other?
Perhaps the friction between them is too great, and they end up fighting with one another. Perhaps circumstances force them to work together, and they learn to compromise with one another to get the job done. Perhaps their personalities work well with one another at the start, and they see how well the other balances them out. Or perhaps they hate one another so much that they outright REFUSE to learn from each other at all (because that tells us something about both OCs too!).

BanditRingtail3 In reply to RobinRone [2011-02-12 08:46:20 +0000 UTC]
Erf. And that's pretty much where I failed with Raccoon. Yeesh, I hope I can get better with this. I guess I'd better practice if I want to improve. Only way to learn.
Still, the character I have in mind for that book OCT is something of an orphan... although circumstances were a little unusual for him...

I try. I considered the criticism and drawbacks of PMOCT and tried to build an OCT that was even better. TBOS will be very, very different. I'm really excited to see what the new style changes, and where the pros and cons are of this free-form set-up. If that enthusiasm can reach other people, then I must be doing something right!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
topios In reply to RobinRone [2011-02-10 18:39:37 +0000 UTC]
I'm pretty sure you can't ever fail utterly at something like this *RobinRone , but trying to improve on something good is not a bad thing. It seems to me you've gone in a very different direction this time. PMOCT had a very defined setting, this one is more open. I'm guessing some people might prefer one thing, and others the other, so it'll be fun to see the difference up close(r).
And the enthusiasm is definitely there. Each and every day you all manage to chip away at my reservations about joining. I suspect I'll end up trying just for the fun of it. You can't worry about what everybody thinks anyway, right?

RobinRone In reply to topios [2011-02-10 19:33:07 +0000 UTC]
Pff. I would say hardly ever worry about what most people think, as long as you are telling a story you love.
