Description ~IndagoFeather wanted a gryphon guide, and now she has one! This was actually great fun for me, since I was given the change to expand more on the gryphon races.

And the pictures are not all! Prepare yourself for a page and a half detailing each of the six gryphon types! Ready? Go!

Gryphons!

Netsaid (neht-sehd) Gryphons: These white gryphons are most well known of the species, having the most contact with humans. They are actually quite fond of them, as well, and use a human form on different days to celebrate them. Their trademark is the beads in their hair, ranging in color and material according to tribe. They also make clothing for themselves with certain mountain weeds similar to cotton. They use brilliant dyes made from both minerals and organic materials, according to a range of symbols in colors and patterns. Their social structure includes fixed tribes with the Alfemotei (Alpha male), at the top, who is the only rightful father to the children of the tribe. The sons stay and vie for the title of Alfemotei (usually reserved for the eldest, who then challenges his father; if he fails, then the next son is free to challenge until the eldest gives a second go), and when it is gained, the rest fall back into common title and aid mostly in hunting. The females, once of age, leave the tribe to promote genetic diversity and enter other tribes by challenging the older females for acceptance. (Character example: Aamir)

Fensaid (fehn-sehd) Gryphons: These white gryphons are barely known to the human world, isolated in the tallest of the mountains in Tanej. They are never in human form, to the point many who have not seen Fensaid slaves* wonder if they even have the shifting ability. They decorate their manes with many braids, varying widely according to gender, status, age, and region. Other than that, they do little crafting except to aid in survival. They wander the cliffs in male and female troops that only meet during the mating season. At any other time, or when two different troops of the same gender meet, tensions are high, as are the chances of fighting. The females stay together to raise their cubs, sending the males off when they come of age, while the males form troops to better defend themselves while they are still young. Age and the mating season splits up the males due to increased tension and challenging among each other.

*For many humans, especially those in Ovirrin, a gryphon is a prized slave, a trophy of the hunt. While they are majestic in their gryphon form, they are normally forced and locked into their human form for shipping. Many masters keep them that way because of taste, as a form of control, or because the trader’s price to give shifting control to the new owner was too high.

Dirgun (deer-goon) Gryphons: These black gryphons are called human gryphons because when compared to their other species, they are essentially human. Just as Fensaid Gryphons are next to never seen in their human forms, Dirgun are hardly ever seen in their gryphon forms. This evolution is centered around the gryphons’ habitual slavery of humans in the mining of precious jewels common in the mountains. As they meddled more and more with humans, they became more like them, even mingling in blood. They have social structures similar to humans, dress like them, and essentially act like them in all ways. Only their status reminds the slaves that they are gryphons, and now it is only like a title. (Character example: Hani)

Christel (shree-stehl) Gryphons: These black gryphons, living to the far north of Tanej, have remained unmingled with humans. They, like Fensaid Gryphons, rarely use their human form, except in dealing with humans or other humanoid races. During that, they normally drape themselves in pelts from various animals, even other gryphons, as a show of power. They also wear dyed feathers and feathers from brilliantly colored birds in their manes. Their social structure is more like that of lion prides, with a male at the head and several females. Males leave the tribe once they are of age and wander to gain strength until they can challenge the lead males of other tribes. Females hunt and provide for the tribe while the male defends it.

Lichma (lee-shmah) Gryphons: In legend, these gryphons are said to be born of the love between Black and White Gryphons, who had always been at odds. This is true, as Lichma, or Silver Gryphons, are basically the child of a Black and White Gryphon. These gryphons are inherently gentle, but are also very powerful and often are naturally able to siphon the elements, normally wind. The region the gryphon is born in usually effects how the gryphon is raised. In some regions, they are killed straight away, as well as the parents, while some become Alfemotei or sages.

Chkra (shkrah) Gryphons: The rarest of the rare in all gryphon types, the reason for the birth of Chkra, or Golden Gryphons is unknown. In legend, it is said they are the Silver Gryphon’s opposite– born of the hate between Black and White Gryphons rather than their love. Yet, even those who fear such a child would not kill it, for Golden Gryphons hold even more power than their silver counterparts. They are inherently ambitious and aggressive, and though they can also siphon elements, their nature is much more destructive. If they are raised with good enough care, they can become leaders of great wealth to their tribes, but if not, and their truggles cannot be solved, their power can be misplaced and cause chaos to all that come in contact with the individual. (Character example: Legonae)

These gryphon races, the Black, White, Silver, and Gold Gryphons, as well as Tanej, also called The Realm, was inspired by the descriptions in the RPG Spirits of the Earth ( [link] ) and its admin, . I give thanks to her as well as hefty credit.
