Description The room and all the objects were made at a real scale. I worked on this scene from december 2003 until late june 2004. This image took 8 days, 8 hours, 49 minutes and 59 seconds to render.

I used radiosity, caustics (for the globe on the desk) and SSS (for the courtains).

Special thanks to Shademaster and Cinemike for suggestions and critiques during the creative process.

Be sure to also check out the second render .

I recommend you to view the "Making of Digital Morning" page which shows all the images I saved during the creative process.

This image has:The image was rendered with:
  • Processor: Intel Pentium 4, 1.7 Ghz;
  • Memory: 1 GB RIMM;
  • HDD: 20 GB SCSI (10000 RPM);

When I first saw it I thought it was a picture of someone's work station. It looks so compleatly real. For some reason I found that the calender having 30 days in February to be entertaining.

That looks so real!!! It's strange how technology can do that. Pretty soon, we're not going to be able to tell the difference! Or maybe... CG looks better!

ouch, thats why it took so long, with that celeron **shudder**

lol. but this is awesomely done! What app did you use?

anyway this is excellent. perhaps youve heard of Prey Alone?

I've worked on the image with an Athlon XP 1800+ ... The exact computer you see in the render. The Celeron was used only to render it - so it wouldn't bother me the huge render time .

OsakaNoDaioh In reply to robodesign [2005-08-12 12:45:48 +0000 UTC]

oh lol. i see. whats better then having the reference object right in front of your face!

lol. I wish i had another computer to do renders like that, so it wont get in the way. when i rendered a projec of mine all togehter it took a probly 40+ hours or render time. Comparatively im still a noob. oh well.

strong work.

Awesome attention to detail, and awesome choice of computer case Twas my old old case I purchased from Tiger Direct about 5 or so years ago *chuckles*. I just can't get over the texturing of the window shades, and lighting.

Oy, I thought it was a photograph of someone's room. _O:

Though for just a little extra detail, you could throw a little bit dust on some of the objects, but since you went through so much trouble already…

Either way I'm completely gabberflasted. Great job!

Crit - Well, its not photorealistic, but you didnt mention that at all, so I wont comment on those flaws. However : Minuses -

#1 - The text should be a higher res, along with other bitmap textures, its all blurred. *make sure to turn off the automatic blurring also.
#2 - I see a lot of noise from the GI. You probably should have taken longer just to clean that up. You mention SSS, so I assume youre using Mental Ray? But why are you using Radiosity? MR already has caustics, with controlable multipliers.
#3 - what program were you using?
#4 - the glass globe, is it supposed to be clear with bubbles, or is it painted over? Because it comes off as being painted over, and its also blurry.
#5 - the side of the case seems to be lit up by the screen, but its being burnt out, meaing the screen is pushing way too much light, that or you have a light projecting on that one spot, either way its destroying the image.
#6 - As I mentioned, theres a lot of noise, you could probably have sped up everything had you done layered renders so you can render the GI on a seaperate pass and save some time with the whole image.
#7 - The bump and size of said bump on the speakers just doesnt look right * once again Im a photo-realistic render junkie, so i may be overblowing this whole thing*

Still looks good, just wanted to be totaly honest.

Pluss +
#1 - Great edge sharpness and texture sharpness on the curtains.
#2 - I think you did a great job with the composition, blues in the center, oranges all around.
#3 - this was a great attempt at a -to scale- scene.

1. The textures ARE at a very, very, very high resolution. Maybe the render anti-alias made them look a bit blurry.
2. Yes, the GI is still a bit noisy. I'm using CINEMA 4D - which HAS SSS. I've used Radiosity, because it adds a depth of realism by calculating the photon's path.
3. Cinema 4D.
4. The Glass globe is 100% tridimensional.
5. The screen its self is emitting radiosity luminance. Btw... The texture of the screen is made in such details that if you render a very close-up, you can see the pixels on it.
6. Perhaps.
7. Those are well done and are very similar to the real thing.

Thank you very much for the critiques.
