Description
The room and all the objects were made at a real scale. I worked on this scene from december 2003 until late june 2004. This image took 8 days, 8 hours, 49 minutes and 59 seconds to render.I used radiosity, caustics (for the globe on the desk) and SSS (for the courtains).
Special thanks to Shademaster and Cinemike for suggestions and critiques during the creative process.
Be sure to also check out the second render .
I recommend you to view the "Making of Digital Morning" page which shows all the images I saved during the creative process.

its a nice render but for reality it needs some kindoff dirtying
my pc is no where near that clean and my desk is a mess
and after 9 days rendering i would be near the end of my patience
the windows are really impressive but the computer is too clean
a good job but with the required dirtying it would be a lot less cgi looking

that is truly amazing. ignore the nay-sayers. I can see the 2003-ish technology here
I had that wallpaper!
I've never gotten into 3-D and works like these are the reason...I couldn't fathom spending that much time making something look realistic xD

this is a really outstanding render. very good details, a beautiful softness on the shapes like the screen. moreover, the colors are just respected as the dimension (i've this screen just beside me on a macintosh...this is a huge 21" one)

Amazing work! Since you selected "advanced critique" and I have zero skills at rendering the only thing I would add is a few scratches to the edge of the desk. Mines all banged up! It looks fantastic! Incredible work!

All of work payed off, because the lighting is fabulous. The only thing I would suggest is that you add some degree of reflectivity to the computer components so they don't appear matte.

Again, I don't know what's going on but the render shouldn't have taken more than 4-5 hours.
After 9 days, you shouldn't have this many artifacts.
Nicely built scene, but still needs lots of work.

If you're talking about the compression artifacts, that's what jpeg is. It uses lossy compression to avoid getting a gargantuan file size. The only artifacts I can see can be attributed to the format used to save the image.
As far as the image itself is concerned, there are some things that could be improved. The plastics are unnaturally smooth, for example, and the side of the desk is a tad reflective. This is nothing against the artist's skills; entire careers have been built out of fixing exactly those problems. A wonderful piece.

Oh yes, it needs so much work. Now instead of saying that, how about actually saying what could use work? Maybe a "the curtain's shadows are a tad bit off, real curtains would have more detail here" or maybe "the lens of the webcamera should be a little more this way"? I mean yes it's good to offer advanced critique but did you even read how long the piece took?
And about the time it took. First of all these objects are made at real scale. That's 1:1 scale. The panels in the desk that are 3 feet high in real life are three feet high in this picture. Also with more advanced lighting techniques the render time takes longer because the computer has to calculate where the light is, what the direction is (if it has one), where the shadows would be, what reflections would be cast by the light, and the subtle gradiation of colour on the surface the light is actually focused on. Add just those two things together and it could take about a day to render. Also the processor is good, no doubt, but 1.7gHz isn't amazing and just because of that it would take a much longer time than a 3.2gHz, or even just a 2.4 (what I have).
To the artist: excellent job and I will definately check out the other two pictures.
