Step 1: Find base sprites. A good place to start is DesktopPonies

Step 2: Draw your pony using the base sprites. I personally use MS Paint for this step, but GIMP works fine too

Step 3: Repeat step 2 until you have all the frames (a basic trot uses 16 frames)

Step 4 (MS Paint users): Open GIMP and put each sprite on its own layer

Step 5 (optional): Replace the background color with Transparency

Step 6: Export as a .gif file. Make sure each layer has the "replace" and "50ms" tags (you can do this in either the Layers pane, or the Export Options window)

Step 7: ????
Step 8: Profit
