Description
I wanted to try something organic for a change, inspired by R-Type and various other shmups I'm playing currently. It's not intended for Split Skies though, I just like using the GBA's resolution ^^Related content

Speaking of gooey shmup bosses...has anybody here ever heard of Phalanx for the SNES or Disposable Hero for the Amiga? Both of them have some really disgusting yet interesting creatures and monsters.

I've heard of that SNES one, but not the Amiga one. I'll have to go look that up.

Thanks! Also, Amiga Longplay by Cubex55? That's some nostalgia there. XD I used to watch those videos a lot! I'm surprised I missed this one.

I am not sure if you actually looked at Phalanx in detail...but after the second level, the enemies start getting more and more biological looking. Phalanx goes in a different direction with its "womb levels" than R-Type. R-Type goes for the whole "exoskeletons" and "eyeballs" theme but the biological enemies of Phalanx seem to be more focused on "cyborg" enemies partially covered in featureless blobs of tissue and growths. You can see the influence of Gieger in R-Type but in Phalanx, the enemy seems more akin to disgustingly soft and fleshy tumors and mutated organs.

WOW that sounded condescending.

Something about the implied inflection behind "I am not sure if you actually looked at Phalanx in detail..." seems like you are assuming I'd go looking into a game and not actually pay attention to the very aesthetics I'd be looking into the game for.

Ah. I meant no offense...just that Phalanx is unfortunately a rather lesser known game and it does not get the attention it deserves. As a case in point, I have heard of many games but since I am not much of a gamer, I have no idea of what they are actually about.

Gotcha.
I need to learn to stop being so quick on the draw.

I am going to send you a note as I have more games to discuss as I do not mean to turn this poor man's deviation into a talk show.

Very good job,i like the background a lot,the blood is also a nice detail.
The environment of shmup is completely retranscribed and is successful.
A little spaceship in front of the monster would have been a great finalization

It needs a green sphere half the size of the arcade cabinet flying out of its mouth

The ammount of detail the alien has is impressive. I took a quick zoomed look and my eyes still hurt
I love the texture of the monster, specially on the teeth. The background contrasts nicely with it too, too bad there are no familiar objects that would help to measure the alien, because I'd like to know how big is it. (not that I'm planning on going to space or something)
You did a great work there

That is scary looking! Awesome work. Reminds me of this game on the Nintendo called Xexyz. Anyways, the details look brilliant and the shading is very good as well. Awesome work.

That's...really detailed and really bright. I'd suggest cutting down on the detail department on the tongue or...something...
Would you mind explaining the structure of this beast-ish thing? And is that an eye on the end of its muzzle-resembling thing?

robotriot In reply to dwyII [2005-01-02 21:01:52 +0000 UTC]
Well, it's supposed to consist of worms, and yes, there's an eye in there, but in the end, it all comes down to what you want to see in it
