You said in one of the comments you weren't sure where to go to get a good planet tut. I've been compiling this collection for about 2 years since I started so:

has a very good, very detailed one. I'd recommend looking at that first

This looks really cool. I will let you know how it works after I try to create my first scene with it.

I like it... it gives me some more ideas. and yeah maybe it is not perfect but it has merit, and at least you are trying to help others. that counts for a lot in my book. Thank You!

Well, it's good that you made tutorial, but honestly, you should work more on that. Shift during making circles is a must! Try to get some info from other space artists so you can improve yourself. Everyone does. It is a must also
And rest of you, don't be harsh, we can keep it all in friendly form, after all, this dude wanted to help you

This tutorial is dreadful. "Next use the elliptical tool to make a perfect circle". Then why are the planets oval shaped? Hold shift while you drag out the shape. And where's the atmosphere? And lens flares are really cliched and pretty much a big taboo in space art.
Oh, AND you should credit for using his starfield stock. Bad form man.

You know it's possible to give constructive criticism and now be a complete faggot, right?
You should probably work on that. ouo

That's fair enough. I said it and then I apologized for it soon after. Nobody's perfect. We all say things without thinking at some stage

Ya is the man. One of the main inspirations for me getting into space art. I don't mean to be rude but you shouldn't have uploaded this tutorial. It's gonna make people learn the wrong way. Or at least it leaves out really important things when learning. Like atmosphere, Cloud maps, shadow, and useing lens flares really should be avoided.

I feel bad now. I know it takes time to make tutorials and your intentions are good. AndI seeyou edited the comment to include hameed so well done. I remember starting out. I was gonna do a tut too but I kinda moved away from space art because I lost heart when looking at all the brilliant stuff I was competing with. Anyways, I'd hate to think I turned you off space art so as a way of apologizing anytime you need help or advice on a space art piece you're working on I'd be glad to help out and offer a critique and pointers and stuff. Keep at it anyway

i think the biggest problem is that i don't have photo shop cs4 i have Elements which i hate>

I had CS4 and i didn;t like it. It's great, there's no doubt. Some of the new features are breathtaking but for the likes of me (I have a crappy pc with only a GB of RAM) CS4 just slowed down my computer. There's stuff like the 3d painting engine and the new intelligent photomanip features that I never really used for anything but they were still slowing everything down. Dunno what you're PC specs are but if you haven't got a good graphics card and at least 2GB of RAM I'd actually recommend PS7. It's what I've always used and so far it can do anything I need it to. Especially for creating planets/space art. And it would be alot cheaper. And you could always upgrade to CS4 (or 5 which is out soon if not already) for $200.
Out of interest what is it that elements doesn't have. Most used things in space art when starting out is:
Filter>Noise
Filter>Render>Clouds
Filter>Distort>Spherize
Filter>Stylize>Emboss
Layer Mask
Adjustment Layer Masks
If elements has all these and all the basic tools (brush, paint bucket, marquee tool etc) then it should be able to do anything you need.

Robotrob44 In reply to LukeQuietus [2010-04-18 23:37:33 +0000 UTC]
it has most of it except layer masks and adjustment layer mask.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
LukeQuietus In reply to Robotrob44 [2010-04-19 02:54:44 +0000 UTC]
Well once you've got the filters then you can do without the masks. They're just really handy while experimenting with effects and colours. You can mess around with everything at any stage and switch off the layers here and there and erase 'em in the end without ever having to mess up the actual layers.
You can do without them though. Most people don't even know how to use them and produce great works. It's all practice.

yeah. but all my planets look pretty retarded. Practice Practice Practice!

LukeQuietus In reply to Robotrob44 [2010-04-19 22:04:04 +0000 UTC]
Well what do you have most trouble with? The main thing I think is you're going about it the wrong way. The texture is good (but still needs more time and work) and you need to build an atmosphere and use a shadow layer. Anyways, it is all practice and experimnting. The good thing is that's the fun part. Now go practice! I'm gonna watch you so hopefully I can offer some tips in the future if you want.
