I stopped, calling an end to this little game. Her soft footsteps stopped a few feet behind me. I waited a few breaths, then sighed. "I know you're there." I heard a slight giggle and turned.
A young woman with brown eyes and brown hair pulled up in two ponytails walked out from behind a tree. She had no Elven Crest which only meant she was a Nameless. "Why are you following me?" I asked.
She flipped her hair behind her shoulder. "Well… I've never seen someone like you. Dark clothes, a cloak, that sword. Even your pointy ears. You kinda look suspicious." I frowned, then noticed her round ears. She's not an elf?
"Who are you?" My hand never left the hilt of my sword.
"Maya Yuzuki. And you?" She smiled.
"Dsvarg. Who sent you?"
"No one, I was just-"
"Following me? Because I'm different from what you're used to?" I pulled out my sword with the head of Iuk on it.
"Hey, I didn't mean-"
"I don't know who or what you are. And I don't like being followed." She sighed in resignation. Then she lashed out with her foot and the sword flew out of my hand. I parried her next blow, my surprise leaving quickly. I clenched her wrist, pulling her arm behind her back. She kicked off the ground, flipping over me. She had training, and with training comes purpose. I will find hers out.
She landed and I kicked her in the gut, then elbowed the side of her head. She gasped, staggering to the side. She caught herself and pushed off a tree, jumping at me. I strengthened my stance, preparing for the impact. She crashed into me, trying to knock me down. I had misjudged her momentum and the surroundings. My foot slipped in mud and we both fell into the nearby pond.
We were submerged. Maya quickly swam up. I started to follow her, but my cloak was caught on a rock. I ripped it off, then kicked off the bottom. I surfaced, gasping for air and pulled myself out.
"What's your problem?" I looked up and saw Maya perched on a branch. She wasn't even wet. Not natural. I jumped up to another branch, climbing on. She took a step back, our footing considerably poorer.
"I want to know why you were really following me."
She sighed. "You looked suspicious! So I followed! Does every girl you meet have to go through this?"
"Only the suspicious ones." I stepped to the branch she was one. We were lucky this tree was huge, with plenty of space between the upper branches. Or unlucky. I kicked at her, she blocked with her leg. We both stepped away from each other, regaining our balance. I saw her realize her disadvantage, being on the thinner side of the branch, away from the trunk.
She kicked my chest, slamming me against the trunk. I grabbed her ankle, then threw her to the side. She caught a branch, the climbed up to a higher one. She moves like an elf. I climbed up after her. It would be harder for me on the higher branches. I was bigger and weighted more. Hopefully she didn't know this.
I caught up to her. She stared at me annoyed, then swung at my head. I quickly ducked, then kicked my leg under her. She made a surprised noise, then flipped onto the tree next to this one.
"Tell me the truth and I'll let you go."
"I already did! Besides, I doubt you'd believe the truth if it was staring you in the face! I'm done with this." I raised an eyebrow as she moved her hands in a peculiar motion. Then, to my surprise, water shot out and straight for my chest. I was slammed into the trunk, the slid off the branch, the impact of the water leaving me stunned. I hit the branch below me, then tumbled to the ground.
I rolled, landing just right to receive as little damage as possible. I looked up and watched Maya jumping through the trees, getting farther and farther away.
I didn't know what she was supposed to be, but next time I would be ready.
