Description
Here's the drawing I did to celebrate "Project A-Ko" turning 20 a couple days ago. As I've mentioned before, "Project A-Ko" is the thing that got me interested in anime in the first place. I caught this movie late one night on the scifi channel, back when they used to show anime, and I was instantly hooked. It's not just one of my favorite animes, or favorite animated movies, it's one of my favorite movies, period.I haven't done A-Ko fanart in a while, and this maybe isn't my best work, but I wish my artistic skills had been this good back when Central Park Media had re-released the movie on DVD. They did this fanart contest in which the 10 best submissions were included as one of the many extras on the disc. I was one of the winners, but my entry was just so crappy, I'm almost embarrassed it's on there, which is why I haven't bragged about it before now.
So, if you happen to come across the remastered edition of "Project A-Ko," you can see an example of my crude early work buried among the bonus features. However, I wouldn't recommend checking it out for that reason, but rather, simply because it's such a fun movie.
Coincidentally, it's a pretty big month for A-Ko's dad, since just a week after her movie turned 20, he makes his long-awaited return to the big screen.

I managed to see it recently. All I can say is "awesome." Great animation, great music, great action, great humor, and enjoyable characters, although I will admit the whole subplot involving C-Ko as the missing princess of this one planet did kinda confuse me a little. I didn't know if she really WAS their princess or if it was just that the captain was so drunk off his ass that he made this ploy just as an excuse to invade Earth. They never developed on that aspect that much, so I kinda assumed it was the latter. But I do really enjoy this movie. And nice recreation of them!

Hey, thanks. I'm glad you liked the movie. Just to clarify, C-Ko really was their lost princess. That was the whole reason D was on Earth- to look for her. I think at first you're supposed to assume that A-Ko is the princess- that would account for her super strength- but then the real explanation is revealed at the end when you see her parents. And just in case you still doubt whether C-Ko was the princess, the Leptonian queen makes an appearance in the third sequel and is revealed to have a similar personality to C-Ko's. Also, minor correction: the captain was a woman. I know it's hard to tell because of her voice, but that was part of the joke.

I see. Maybe they'll cover all this stuff in the sequel OVAs.

Unfortunately, none of the sequels are anywhere near as good as the original.

Yeah, well, it's often true that sequels aren't as good. Β The first Project A-Ko was a theatrical release and then all the sequels are direct to video, which I know in Japan doesn't always mean a decrease in quality the way it does elsewhere, but with these movies, it kinda does. Β However, I'd say that the A-Ko sequels are still worth checking out if you're really into the original.Β

Sometimes they can be as good, if not better than the originals, but yeah, there are the occasions when that doesn't always apply. Still, maybe the sequels will give us some character development and some explanations for things that weren't answered in the first movie. Or at least they'll hopefully be entertaining.

I almost said this in my previous response, but my biggest frustration with the sequels is that there's not as much character development as I would have liked. Β I can kind of understand that; Project A-Ko is mainly intended to just be crazy and fun, but when I spend a certain amount of time with characters- even if they're just cartoon characters intended primarily to make audiences laugh- I can't help feeling invested in them. Β Sometimes it even feels like I care about them more than the people writing for them. Β I guess there's a little character development in the A-Ko sequels, but it didn't seem to be a top priority for the filmmakers.

I see. I tend to be that way as well.
Well, at least there could still be some explanations as to some of the things that weren't answered in the first movie at least.
I do have an idea for a Project A-Ko picture though.

That's cool.
I honestly can't think of any major unanswered questions from the first movie (except or where all the Leptonian men are, or whether their society even has men- and if not, how do they procreate?).

Yeah, I tend to get invested in certain characters like that. I mentioned that I found the leads enjoyable.
Well, as I mentioned, I didn't feel like the whole thing with C-Ko being their princess was explained too well in the movie. I assumed it was either that or the captain was always drunk off his/her ass and was making these things up. That could have used a little backstory, especially regarding that opening. (By the way, do you recommend the Japanese version with the English subtitles as well?)
