Rockgem’s simple Cute Skull Tutorial

What you need:-

To make each little skull you will need the following…

* White oval 2 hole bean shaped toggle
(approx 1 inch across)
* 4mm black beads
* glue
*black acrylic paint & paintbrush

1. Firstly you take your toggle and flip it the wrong way round.

2. Take your beads I usually use 4mm ones as they fit nice into the little holes in the toggles

3. Glue two of the beads in place - these will be the eyes of your little skull

4a. Once the glue is dried its time to add the details
Using black acrylic paint and a fine brush add a couple of small dashes for a nose…

4b. Then add a row of dashes along the bottom of the toggle for teeth

4c. If you want a girly cute skull add some little dashes either side the eyes to look like ‘eyelashes’

5. Customize!
These little skulls can be customized however you want some of the examples I’ve used to give them more character are
* crowns - little crown shapes cut from craft foam
* bows - these work well on the girly skulls - adding a tiny bow made from 3mm wide ribbon
* flowers - tiny craft/card embellishment flowers work well on these too!

EDIT : you can also use small cogs and watch parts to make them slightly steam-punk in look

6. Put them to use!
These little cute skulls are pretty durable and can be used in many little craft projects I’ve mainly used them on hair-sticks, hair clips and pin-badges but I have also added them to Halloween cards rings and used them as scatter table decorations for Halloween parties

EDIT II : a huge, huge, HUGE thankyou to *charligal-stock for suggesting this for a DD and to ^PirateLotus-Stock for featuring it

thankyou for taking the time to look & for the compliment it started off as a simple idea i played with cause i had two odd little toggles & from that the results were better than i expected and so i decided to whip up a lot more for friends and for selling at craft markets and then the tutorial sort of just followed that

What on earth is a "White oval 2 hole bean shaped toggle"???

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rockgem In reply to lohkk [2012-10-19 15:17:32 +0000 UTC]

its pretty much what it says it is - a toggle that is oval in shape or often reffered to as 'bean' shaped and it has two holes through it, toggles come in a variety of shapes and colours and some only have the one hole through them.

Perhaps I should be more specific: what is a "toggle"? I've never heard of it as an item.

ah, i see if you look at the first picure in the tutorial you can see what one is, usually you find them on the draw strings of tracksuit bottoms or combat trousers.

thankyou kindly it was an idea me and my mom came up with cause i had some odd toggles and i was thinking what i might be able to do with them, i tried out 4 with the toggles i did have and they worked well and i made my first 2 sets of hairsticks, one got given to a friend as a birthday gift the other got sold, and my mom suggested i make more so i ordered in some more supplies and started to experiment
i used the same idea to make some little cute cats the same sort of style - i might have to type up a tutorial for those as well!

Your very welcome Gem. Sounds like your mom is a clever lady as well. A tutorial for the cats would be good.

rockgem In reply to janinesmith54 [2012-10-20 10:12:45 +0000 UTC]

she is, if i have an idea and get stumped on it usually the first person i ask is my mom and shes usually the one who can suggest a solution for me i woudl be totally lost without her
well the basis is similar just i start with a black toggle and 2 green beads, red paint for the nose white for the whiskers and some felt scraps ( or foam sheet scraps) for the ears and tail

This is such a cute idea for Halloween favors and decorations, as well as making some neat Halloween accessories. Have invited it into a few groups if that is okay

rockgem In reply to WDWParksGal [2012-10-19 15:43:42 +0000 UTC]

thankyou kindly for the compliment , i've just used a set of these with different coloured bows on for 'glass markers' for a friend's halloween party i attached them to small rings that clip round the glass stems so you can tell whose drink is whose if i can get some plain ones i might try these on the ends of swizzle sticks for sirring drinks as well , i started off making a couple of these just for my own entertainment then the more i thought the more possibilities for uses came to me , feel free to invite away - its wonderful to know my work is liked so much

No problem Would it work if you had a black thingy and used white paint?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rockgem In reply to LionesseRampant [2012-10-18 20:56:23 +0000 UTC]

yes it would work , the colours would be inverted but it would work, however following a similar plan with a black toggle you can make little cute black cats instead [link]

lol! thankyou kindly for the comment/compliment , i'm still discovering new ideas to use these little skulls for as well as seeing what else i can do with basic toggles, most recently i've used the same sort of idea i used for this tutorial to make little black cats as well

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Boo-tastic In reply to rockgem [2012-10-19 21:33:35 +0000 UTC]

That's adorable!

Hey, even a pumpkin is that basic shape.
Man, there's tons of things, now that I think about it, that could easily be translated from a simple toggle. ^u^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rockgem In reply to Boo-tastic [2012-10-19 21:40:11 +0000 UTC]

it is the same sort of shape so if you had one of these in orange, the black beads, black paint and then say some orange felt for the stalk it might well work out right now i'm working on a zombie bunny one for a friend using a khaki green toggle
the more i think and dabble the more applications i can think of for these toggles, i shall be trying some rabbits for Easter with luck or maybe some yellow chickens, but i know with a brown toggle you can make a cute owl. or bat the black toggles with some red beads and some pipecleaners you can make spiders...
