Whether you love them or hate them, rivals are an essential part of life, for competition promotes evolution.Here are some of Ash's biggest rivals(+ Barry, lol) imo. Note that I specifically left out people who he only met at a league and ended up losing to there. So no Ritchie, Harrison ect.
Who is your favourite rival? I'm going to have to say Paul because they had the most and (imo) best battles, the whole Chimchar plot ect. The story line with Paul was just amazing, for Pokemon standards anyway and is a big reason why my favourite series so far is in fact, Diamond and Pearl.
EDIT: OH GOD I FORGOT MORRISON'S PONY TAIL THINGY. On 2nd thought maybe I should just stay quiet, I mean who really notices that? Keep your eyes on the other fabulous men! :]]]
Let's just say it's the angle that hides it. that's usually my answer to things.

Ash has some neat rivals throughout his journey.
Gary was a snob that has great skill in battling even when he retired from League Battles.
Morrison was a VERY late entry (should've been introduced before Rustboro or around Dewford) but still gave us some rivalry and bond with Ash. Too bad his rivalry was brief.
Paul was the anime equivalent of Silver and yet, he was still his own rival in a way and gave Ash a tough time in terms of proving one's skill.
Barry, while not being his main DP rival, was still a good trainer and retain his personality seen in the games. It was nice to see him in action whenever he could battle or alike.
Trip was ok overall. I can't say he's Diet Paul anymore as for a "jerk rival", he can be helpful at times plus his criticisms have some points. Although I wish he and Ash got the full battle they deserved and it wasn't him wiping the follow. It can go either way but it should be a close battle and Trip fully respects Ash and stuff.

Trip: Dude was a Paul wannabe...he doesn't even deserve caps.....How did Ash ever lose to this guy I'll never know.
Morrison: Stubborn and always hungry true, but him and Ash grew a friendship that can never be broken....too bad we don't see him anymore.
PAUL: ASH'S MOST STRICT AND SERIOUS RIVAL, BOTH WERE SO DIFFERENT AND YET SO ALIKE! THEY HAD THE BEST MOST SERIOUS BATTLE THAT EVER CAME IN POKE'MON. THE WHOLE CHIMCHAR THING, THE STORY FOR THIS RIVALRY WAS AWESOME! They respect each other in the end and hope to meet again one day...so does many fans XDΒ

Trip and paul I hate them both with burning delight of wanting to show them how weak they are.. and how idiotic there ways of training pokemon is... trip a noob.. paul a moron with no emotions treating his pokemon... two of them will forever be on my list of rivals to battle! epic picture by the way ^ ^

I dont like Paul because of his attitude but ye i think he was Ash's best rival. Gary was also good but that was more of a childish rivalry whereas with Paul it was quite serious between them.

Agreed. I think the rivalry with Gary got better in Johto where he himself got more serious and wasn't just picking on Ash anymore. I just wished we could've seen more encounters and battles between the two but it was still early in the show and there weren't as many serious battles anyway. Just look at the Kanto gym battles lol.

Yeah, it would be great if they had a battle again, even though Gary doesnt really battle much anymore but it would still be great. And lol yeah the early gym battles were so bad XD

Paul is my favourite rival too! I thought it was really great how the rivalry developed and intensified over the series, and then ended with mutual respect. I was on the edge of my seat for that league battle, I was hoping for something similar in the Unova league but it didn't really seem that intense... I did like Trip a lot though.

Yeah that was great, I really wish they had done something similar with Trip where Ash is like yeah been through four regions, beaten the Orange League and Battle Frontier, basic enough for you?:]]] Β But Ash is a humble guy, which is respectable.

He is definitely the monster of the list. : D At least he gets better by the end, even complementing his own Pokemon for a well fought battle despite losing.

No, that was a cheap add-on that came from nowhere. If they wanted to give him a nice side, they would've done it in the beginning. Gary at his worst was nowhere near that bad.

I think he started to change when he got smashed by Brandon, after that he wasn't nearly as mean to people, I mean he still wasn't nice to but he wouldn't jump on people with insults anymore.Β So showing a slight(very slight, literally one or two complementing lines to Electivire lol) kindness to his Pokemon wasn't really out of no where imo. There have been many instances where characters much more evil than Paul would through various events gain positive traits, Vegeta from Dragonball for example.

True, it's just that they made him almost as bad as Cyrus. Several episodes were dedicated to show just how horrible he was, and the their's the Tag Team Tournament...

Yeah, the whole Chimchar story line definitely brought out the worst in him.
Releasing Pokemon that you're not going to use on the other hand isn't so bad considering they'd just be rotting in their balls otherwise. The fact that he judged them like that just severely clashed with Ash's ideals. Which was a factor in making their dynamic great imo.

He was like Silver, only he had no reason to be an asshole.
There's also the fact that he was supposed to be a Take That against people who act like him, but instead became the head writers' pet character infuriates me even more.
