Description
Ellisville Missouri, April 13th, 2023.Here is a picture of a stretch of the original 1926 Route 66/Manchester road that has been long bypassed and abandoned.
In 1932 Route 66 was rerouted further south, but this stretch continued to be used as part of Manchester road.
I looked at a 1937 aerial photo of this area and I could see that this stretch was still in use. I don't know when Manchester road was rerouted, but another aerial photo from 1955 shows the new section of road further south and the southwestern end of the old pavement was cut off, but it could still be reached from the east. It looks much the same in photos from 1966 and 1970. However a photo from 1981 shows that State Highway 100 was built through this area and cut off the eastern access.
As a side note, if you look at current map of this area, Highway 100 is labeled "Old Route 66", this is incorrect. Highway 100, from where it separates from Manchester road until at least where it intersects Manchester Road again a few miles west, was never part of Route 66.
The area that is between this road and the newer Manchester road is currently listed for 2.4 million.
