Description
Girard Illinois, September 2016.Girard Illinois was on the original alignment of Route 66 and was bypassed by the newer route in 1930.
I don't know if there is any meaning to this or not, but it wasn't until I started travelling around Illinois with my wife, that I started encountering towns with a "town square". The square would be about the size of a city block and would usually have some sort of government building or a small park in it and sometimes both. Traffic would often be routed in the fashion of a roundabout, one-way but in a square shape.
These sort of things can get swallowed by the development in cities, but most of the small towns I've encountered in Missouri seem to be laid out around a crossroad and some main streets.

Charleston, Illinois, has an actual "town square". It grew to be quite large but only because of the college there. Otherwise, it still has a rather small-town atmosphere~at least it did when I used to live there.
