Commission for Aelith-Earfalas , swordfish kid Leeonis! I was originally gonna draw him grinning, but thought maybe this expressed his personality more.
Since you opted not to see the piece progression, go on and let me know if any colors need adjusting

Another thing I really like about this is the shading. How are you able to get a feel for how lighting shines on certain objects?

I've been trying to figure out how to answer this one... I think a lotta the way I light stuff is influenced by when I did lineless--having color differences define the shapes and boundaries of objects rather than line (like how the scarf is shaded here). Β
Most of the time though, I'm not satisfied with how something looks, so I throw a shadow and play around with the shape. Β Like with the right arm, it wasn't shaded at all and looked dumb at first. Β So then I put a shadow but it still didn't look quite right, so I threw a lighter color on his hand area. Β It's sorta a matter of balance I guess, rather than realistic shading

I think I understand now. I've run into some cases where I've felt that a particular object looked flat and I didn't know what to do about it. I'll try playing with shadows more.

Yeah! Β The way I color, with locked layers, makes it really easy to play around with and change the shadow shapes, so I do it a lot! Β Just try a bunch of stuff out
