Tried my hand at an epic pixel piece. Inspired by this lovely work: [link]So, I really wanted to make something simple but powerful. Because with the huge spectrum of differences among Sonic fans, things get really muddled up and drama-tastic. So here's something I hope every fan can enjoy. I really wanted to give the emerald justice as the mysterious, powerful thing that it is. Hope I succeeded!
My favorite version of Sonic's ever-changing design is from Sonic CD, during the animated scenes, because of the simple and charming design. [link]

This is very cool. It would be even without considering that it's pixel art, but knowing that, it's even more impressive. Sonic's reaction is great here, it makes me think it's the first time he comes across a chaos emerald. It really takes me back to when I was a kid and collecting the emeralds felt like a really impressive achievement.

Oh my gods that's actually all in pixels.
I was going to comment about how much I loved the concept and its execution (swirly green... light? Wind? Smoke? Energy?) but once I got close and realized it was pixels... it floored me. Good job, sir/madam/honorific of choice.
The background has that kind of surreal feeling of the early 8-bit special stages- the more I look at the picture, the more detail I see. Just... dang. How do you manage this much detail in pixel art? I never would've have the patience for this.

Thank you thank you soooo much for taking the time to notice the fact this is pixel. All I gotta say is I had to be insane back when I was making pixel scenes like this. I think it's cuz I was naive. I couldn't imagine doing something like this again.
I'm really happy you find the background to be reminiscent of the old special stages. When I make Sonic art, I definitely try for surreal since that's what made the old school games so great! Really glad you enjoyed it. Thanks!
