GAH! I've lost my drawing mojo and I'm trying to get it back. I'm still drawing, but something is still missing. What is it?! Maybe this meme will help?-------------------------------
Michael Turner: He has been a huge inspiration and influence in my drawings. Fathom issue #2 was my first comic book. I remember gazing at the purple cover as I walked passed the window display. It was like one of those moments in the movies where boy and girl fall in love at first sight.
Music: The main fuel that helps me work. A lot of the ideas I get come form listening to music. I like all kinds, and I mean all kinds - rock, swing, classical, folk, metal, bhangra, etc. There are days when I can't stand a certain genre and need to switch to another.
William Bailey: One of my biggest influences when I was still oil painting. Unfortunately I don't have those paintings anymore, not even a photograph. Ah well, sometimes life forces a fresh slate for good reason. I love his quiet tones and smooth velvet texture, a quality I try to apply in my digital works.
Horses: Before I learned how to draw people, I drew horses. Even today, I approach drawing the human body as how I draw horses and always include these elements: strong chest, great legs, a nice round full butt and a gorgeous mane... I mean, hair.
Vermeer: I love his use of light and the quietness of his paintings. Actually, I just really love Dutch paintings. Something about the blue.
Awesome cinematography: You know how it goes when you're watching a movie that looks great at every angle. It's like an inspiration tidal wave. Hmmm... I haven't seen anything that excited me at the cinema lately. Maybe that's why I'm in a rut.
Joe Madureira: Battle Chasers was the second comic book series I collected after Fathom. Anime and Manga never sank its hooks into me (Studio Ghibli is an exception) but Madureira's work had a great mix of eastern and western styles that I found very appealing. Of course, his dynamic battle sequences are always impressive.
Period romance movies: Especially the Jane Austen ones. The lighting and composition of each scene is just like a painting. The handsome and witty gentlemen are a welcomed treat too.
Monkey Island: "You fight like a cow!" ... Monkey Island is just awesome. That's all that needs to be said.
Dance: There's nothing more expressive than watching the body of a dancer. Having danced when I was younger, it has helped me become more aware of body language in my drawings.
Disney: Their animated films have always been an inspiration. Tarzan being my favorite.
Tim Schafer: Game designer and awesome writer! He has amazing wit and a great sense of humor. Even reading his blog inspires me.
Adam Hughes: No one draws Catwoman like Mr. Hughes! And even better that his version of Selina Kyle looks like Audrey Hepburn. I love how he draws women - strong and gorgeous. His style is one I truly admire and often spend much time studying his pieces. I've still got a long way to go.

For the win!! lol Right on!!! I think I tend to want to draw my women like that although I'm seeing those same things begin to come through to my guys as well.
You're purely awesome!
I can so see every one of these influences in your art too; that's really neat!

Haha. All men should be like majestic stallions. mmmmmm...
Cool. I put Turner in the largest box, but looking at my work now, his influence isn't that apparent anymore.

All men should be like majestic stallions..... Indeed...and some are...
lol Usually though the ones we write about in our own little fantasy worlds.
Doh!? Well we all grow and improve over the years so maybe it's not so much of a surprise.
Maybe it's a good thing as it means your style is now all your own!

OMG Michael Turner is the best comic artist ever! I loved when he did Witchblade/Tomb Raider Crossover comics. I don't know what it is, but his style seems a lot more fluid or organic than most artists. Such beauty and edge combined! Oh, can you FEEL the passion?!
Enough about him... I think you have a very nice and unique style and I can definitely tell the influence he has with your work.

I second the Inception vote although that could just be because Joseph Gordon-Levitt looks so good in a three piece suit. My personal animated favorites are Anastasia, Titan A.E. and Howl's Moving Castle. I don't know if you've seen any, but if you have any time, Don Bluth films are so good. They seem on average to have darker themes than Disney. Also, yay for Monkey Island and Pride and Prejudice. *cough* The six hour BBC P&P is good, but that's...six hours so...

I love the Squirrel Nut Zippers! *high fives for swing music*
Have you seen the newest Northanger Abbey? I think you would like it.

I love Pride and Prejudice too. It's like watching beautiful painting after painting, plus the soundtrack just makes me drool. (I also like "regular" romantic comedies - the very best is When Harry Met Sally )
If you like such "artistic" movies, perhaps you could like Fountain from D. Aronofsky . amazing to very last detail.

Awesome! I feel like making one myself, but it'd be so much the same that it'd just be awkward. I hope you'll get your inspiration back soon

Wow thanks for sharing your influences! A fascinating insight to your work. Anyway, speaking of awesome cinematography, have you ever seen the movie, "The Fall"? [link] It's BEAUTIFUL. If you haven't seen it then it might inspire you to get your mojo back

I'm the same when it comes to music. There's certain music that you need at certain times to inspire, but inspire it always does once you find the right kind. I thought I was the only one that worked that way. My husband always comments on the vast variety of my music and states that no one could ever really stick me into a "category". I like it like that.
Disney= inspiration always. That's where I started as a kid and when stuck at kids birthday parties I still bust out the pencil on napkin and whip out a couple Mickey drawing much to the delight of the kids. Phineas and Ferb have also been big lately for me. Ferb is great to draw with his upper lip of expression. Ha Ha! Loving the meme. It's really helping to inspire me. Hope it helps you too.

Woo, yay for shared influences (and bhangra, yesss! ). It's interesting you cited Tarzan as a favorite Disney movie, because I can really see the influence in your color choices and settings (incidentally, the lemur painting you just did made me think of it). Personally, I find the Disney movie that resonates most stylistically with me is probably Beauty and the Beast, but that's because my taste is, like... obscenely girly.

Haha, Beauty and the Beat definitely! I love those beastly princes. What about Treasure Planet? I recently rewatched the movie and it reminded me of Astral Arcana.

YESSSS HRHRHRHR, I LOOOVE Treasure Planet. That's actually where a lot of the inspiration for the setting came from. I don't have the same kind of childhood nostalgia attached to it that I do for BatB, though, which is why I didn't end up picking it as the emblematic "Disney picture" in my influence meme. I didn't see Treasure Planet until my second year of college, believe it or not! Alan insisted I watch it, because he had the Astral Arcana setting idea and he figured I needed to watch it before he tossed AA by me, since it's one of the best ways to explain it, and he was very pleased when I adored it to pieces.

Inception? Nolan's direction is always topnotch. Or you can revisit old ones. I always revisit Atonement.
the cinematography there.
