Description EDIT: This tutorial will be featured in 2 Cosplay magazines!
4th Issue of the Indonesian cosplay magazine called CozMagz www.cozmagz.webs.com/about.htm…
Portuguese cosplay e-zine, Cosplayer issuu.com/cosplayer/docs/cospl…
MiscCostume Blog: www.miccostumes.com/blog/how-t…

Isn't that awesome??? zomg, I'm so excited!!!

---------------------------------------------------------------------

**EDIT: a constant question I get is, "How well does this stuff hold up? Won't it crack or break?" I think this is a rather silly question. Of course clay can crack or break. It's not metal.

Has mine broken yet? No. I made sure to take care of it by securing it to my jacket and packing it well when traveling. Treat it as you would any prop: With care.

As said above, this tutorial can be used for other armor and characters too, not just for Lightning. I'm sure other materials can be used as well, like real clay (if you have access to a real furnace) or paper clay, which air-dries. I chose Scupley cuz I knew how well it held detail, which was important for this prop.

I'll be adding fiber glass on the inside (if I can get ahold of it) to strengthen it so it doesn't break.

Materials:
...1/2 box of white sculpey = $6
...Tin foil = free
...Wire = free
...scotch tape = free
Time: 14hrs (so far)

Finished Pauldron

Sorry it took SO long for me to get back to you, but I went to Otakon this weekend and didn't have time prior to, to take photos or anything. However, here it is! And thanks again for your awesome tutorial! Only problem I ran into, is that when I put the masking tape over the tinfoil and baked the sculpey over top of it, it created lots of fumes/smoke when I opened the oven xD

Great tutorial! The results so far look great. :]

Though I was wondering if it'd be alright if you could post your sketch of the emblem? It'd be really helpful to other Lightning cosers. x:

thanks. ^^ It's finished now, though I might paint it darker than it is at the moment.

^^ in all honesty I find that it's not that accurate anymore. You could probably find a better screen cap of it now that the game is out. I did this when pictures were hard to find.

This is INCREDIBLE.

Could I commission you for one? How much would it be?
What do you mean by wire? what kidn of wire?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RoxyRoo In reply to blitzroyale [2010-07-05 02:45:28 +0000 UTC]

thankyou! ^^

Unfortunately, I stopped doing commissions. I have bad luck with customers, they never pay me... though it's weird. I've been getting a lot of requests lately. >.>

Any wire will do. If you have some wire closet hangers, you can use that. ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

blitzroyale In reply to RoxyRoo [2010-07-05 02:54:47 +0000 UTC]

hmmm can you draw a picture or take a picture or...describe exactly how to wind the wire?
I bought some from Home depot for this LOL.

ew you should ask for half up front.

Also. Which sculpey did you use? orig, sculpey III, or super sculpey >>__<< the choicesss..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RoxyRoo In reply to blitzroyale [2010-07-05 03:04:32 +0000 UTC]

Just "wrap" it around your shoulder. It doesn't have to be perfect. just enough to get the basic curvy shape of your shoulder.

Probably I think that was my mistake before.
I think it was super sculpey. ^^ Just get the big box of it and you're good to go.

blitzroyale In reply to RoxyRoo [2010-07-05 15:08:03 +0000 UTC]

err... around the entire circumference? O___O...like... around and around my arm/shoulder?

ish confusedd*

d'awww. sorry lovely. : O.

I bought SS too <3 not too big a box though... a pound?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RoxyRoo In reply to blitzroyale [2010-07-06 01:11:12 +0000 UTC]

Did you see the picture in the tutorial?

a pound should be more than enough. ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

blitzroyale In reply to RoxyRoo [2010-07-06 03:49:54 +0000 UTC]

so wire = circumference?

So i did ^^

Thank you so much for this *-*

Just a quick question--what did you use (or what are you planning on using) to attach the emblem piece to the main piece?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RoxyRoo In reply to riespark [2010-06-15 22:20:25 +0000 UTC]

I was thinking strips of craft foam or vinyl. >.> I need to finish that thing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

riespark In reply to RoxyRoo [2010-06-15 23:03:23 +0000 UTC]

Ooh, vinyl is a good idea. I just don't think I've ever seen green vinyl before... XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RoxyRoo In reply to riespark [2010-06-16 17:33:38 +0000 UTC]

lol. I've seen blue vinyl. And Yellow. But not green.

BlackMageDark In reply to ??? [2010-05-01 16:08:13 +0000 UTC]

This is an awesome tutorial ^^! I've made pauldrons in the past with craft foam, but I'm making Amano's version of Lightning (along with a few other tweaks I added) so I knew the foam wouldn't curve like I wanted to. Mine is gonna look a bit different but I'll definitely give your tutorial a try! I'll let you know how it works out ^^!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RoxyRoo In reply to BlackMageDark [2010-05-01 17:54:24 +0000 UTC]

Oh! Goodluck!
amano version? where did you find the illustration? I wanna see!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BlackMageDark In reply to RoxyRoo [2010-05-01 18:42:45 +0000 UTC]

There weren't much of the illustrations released, but I found these two ^^. [link] [link] I would love to see how others would make the other characters' Amano versions like lol.

This is the design I drew up though :3 [link] I wanted to avoid looking like just an off-color Lightning ;.

begginerartist12 In reply to ??? [2010-04-21 22:05:41 +0000 UTC]

could this kind of design be used for like an air soft fight or paint ball?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RoxyRoo In reply to begginerartist12 [2010-04-22 06:12:52 +0000 UTC]

Heck no. At least, not if it's made out of sculpey, which is prone to cracking. If you made it out of Paper Clay, it'd be more durable and more easily repaired if it does crack.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

begginerartist12 In reply to RoxyRoo [2010-04-22 06:53:33 +0000 UTC]

maybe i can use ballistic gel

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RoxyRoo In reply to begginerartist12 [2010-04-22 18:54:08 +0000 UTC]

O.o can that be molded?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

begginerartist12 In reply to RoxyRoo [2010-04-23 03:56:29 +0000 UTC]

yeah, if you have a mold made, plus i found a cheap way to make it here, [link] , but i might just try and use pvc pipe, i dont know i might put up some designs for it, hell i should just put up the drawings i have in my art folder... im gonna go

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RoxyRoo In reply to begginerartist12 [2010-04-23 07:37:31 +0000 UTC]

ohh... that's jelly stuff though. And Ballistics gel mimics flesh, not metal, so it won't do much to repel paint balls or air soft pellets.
