CMWyvern In reply to ??? [2013-05-11 03:18:57 +0000 UTC]
I am adding this to my *extremely* long mental list of art projects that I want to do asap! Would it work if I used size 11 Czech beads for all of it except the eyes/spine thingies?

It will work, but you will have to add 2 beads instead of 1(in some places) to make the curves, and it won't look so smooth.

Ok... Is there another size of Czech beads I could use additionally with the 11s, to substitute for the slightly larger beads you have used? (I just tend to buy all Czech beads because they are cheaper but still good quality, and I have a LOT of colors of them.)

You can do something like this [link]
Or just use smaller/narrower beads for the belly, slightly bigger beads for the sides and maybe bigger/wider ones for the back.

You should add a link to sell the beads and an instruction sheet! Then you could sell the entire kit and make some money off this beauty.

Rrkra,
I would like to make this for a friend but wanted to double check with you on the types of beads and number of colors you used. You refer to using cylinder beads (Toho treasures or delicas), size 15 beads, and size 11 beads. Are the size 15 and 11 different beads from the treasures or delicas or is that what you are talking about (size 15 and 11 in delicas)? I've done beading in jewelry but this is the first time I'm trying a piece of beaded sculpture, so I apologize if I seem ignorant.
As far as the colors, you mentioned using only 2 colors in the size 11, the size 15, and the cylinders. Did you mean you used 2 colors for all 3 types of beads (2 colors in size 11, 2 colors in size 15, and 2 colors in cylinders) or did you mean you used one color for the size 11 and one color for the size 15 (and a related color in the cylinders)? You mention using a different color for the belly and I'm not sure if I should be getting more than 2 colors. In looking at the picture of the 5 different colored dragons you did, it looks as though there are more than 2 colors used.
Again, I'm sorry if I'm being dense. I'd really like to try and make this and just wanted to make sure I knew all the materials I needed. Thank you so much for the tutorial and for any help you can give me.

Um...
Size 15 (toho or miyuki, rocailles) - colour 1 (for the belly) and colour 2 (for the inside of tail curve.)
Size 11 (toho or miyuki, rocailles) - colour 1 (for the outer side of tail) and colour 2 (for the back)
Treasures or delica (size 11, I think, those that are bigger than size 15 but smaller than size 11 rocailles) - for the middle (used 2 colours here, but if you use 1 colour nothing much changes).
Magatamas or dagger beads - any colour you want, for the spikes on the back.
Optionally size 8 rocailles - colour 1 for outer side of tail, colour 2 for the back.
^All that above is if you want the belly and the back to be different colours. If you want it all in one colour, then just size 15, 11, treasures, magatama (and maybe size 8) of that one colour.
Maybe this will help [link]
I keep changing my way of making these, so the ones in my gallery differ from this tutorial by now =/

would regular wire work?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Rrkra In reply to HeartSoulLifePassion [2012-10-21 18:38:57 +0000 UTC]
Not sure. Even if it will, it will be much harder than with thread. There are many places where thread changes direction - and in those places wire is very likely to form knots and break...

hey i found ur gallery a little while ago and now I'm really interested in beading and i would like to try to start. there is one problem though: I know nothing about beading or seed beads and i don't know where to start... Help?

Rrkra In reply to lasagnapotterlover [2012-08-23 19:33:42 +0000 UTC]
Hmm... Well, you can try searching for beadwork stitch basics like here - [link] and [link]
Or youtube, if you learn better by seeing the process - it has video tutorials on pretty much everything.
Start with small easy projects
