Description
This beauty is a commission I completed for acsmitty ! She was quite the challenge for me, as she required more ref-less digital painting than I'm used to dealing with, but I hope I did her fierceness justice. It was really fun to test myself this way!Ref: img.photobucket.com/albums/v23…
Please Note me if you are interested in commissioning me.
I offer commissions!

I love the way you make the stripes follow the shape of the horse if that makes sense haha! And the waves give such a powerful image, I love this < 3

Thank you so much! I was still sort of learning the idea of making things "flow" with the subject like that, so I'm really glad it worked out and someone noticed my attempts! This was one of my all-time favorites so I really appreciate you commenting on it even though it's pretty old and letting me feel good about it all over again

AHH I'm glad you're not one of those people who gets angry when people comment on their older work SERIOUSLY thank you haha!
Ahh no problem! I'm really amazed at how well you make the different stock elements your own in the piece as well. It looks like such hard work though, doing all the patterns and painting over and such.

How in the world could they get mad at that?! I get way more excited when someone comments on old works rather than new. That's always the sad thing, as soon as there's something newer in your gallery, suddenly the "old art" gets left behind like a sad toy in Toy Story. Sometimes the old works are our favorites and it's disheartening to lose feedback on it. So for me, I'm ecstatic! And I love that you're one of those people who makes more in-depth, customized comments (versus a generic "this is so pretty!") and even responds to my reply with more than a "you're welcome"! It makes me feel so much more noticed and like we're connecting on a human level versus just one of hundreds of art pieces.
I would say it is, but it's my favorite kind of art to do. I find it an enjoyable challenge, and it's a great medium for new artists. When you first start photomanipulating, you can do very basic things, like cut out a few pieces, paste them together, maybe put a few color tones on it. And you feel good about it and it qualifies as photomaipulation! But then as you progress and advance, you can begin to do more and more difficult techniques, and after a few years you're painting half of the piece by hand and the stock is more of a base than anything else, but it still counts as photomanipulation. With digital painting or another medium where the whole thing has to be done by scratch, it's so much harder on newbies, I think.
Though I will say photomanipulation on the advanced level gets severely underappreciated, so that's kinda unfortunate. It seems to be the thought process that since stock is used, it's easier, but as someone who does both, it's actually much harder because you have to paint realistically enough for it to hold its own side-by-side to actual photos! And it's very hard to truly alter photographs, too, compared to painting from scratch and having total control over everything. Photomanipulation seems to have a bad rep and also is pretty poorly known about. But that's alright, at least I haven't had any prejudice issues with it myself!

NONO I get this entirely? People seem to think using photos is 'cheating' and it 'isn't as talented as drawing uwu' and it makes me sick that people think that? I haven't done any photomanipulations myself and TBH I didn't really come across it very much until recently, but it takes just as much work to cut out the animal, make it blend into its scenery, paint over it, paint over the hair, change the colours, make sure everything goes together well.... But you're right, it's often looked down upon and isn't hugely popular on dA. I think people only think of drawings when it comes to art but it's much broader than that?

I 100% agree. I never knew it was looked down on until I started browsing around and saw terms like "photobashing," realized it's the niche, shoved-in-the-corner folder for groups, it's sometimes against the rules to do for certain groups, etc. And upon further browsing, I'd find hateful comments regarding it. If someone truly does just cut out a photo, paste it on another photo, add a layer of red and call it art, I get that. Sometimes I kinda wish there were different terms for it, like maybe that is "photo editing" instead. I've seen some people call what I do "mixed media" instead of photomanipulation but it's still sad that they feel the need to. Someone recently said something along the lines of "this is so good, you better not submit it as photomanipulation and as mixed media instead, because it deserves it!" as if photomanipulation were an insult.
I could honestly ramble for pages upon pages about it all, but I'm glad to find someone who agrees and appreciates the time and art in it

HONESTLY rant forever if you want to, I do the same XD And yeah like, adding a filter over a photo or not changing anything I can understand since that's moreso editing than manipulation, but TBH this site is so pretentious in its views on art. People seem to think that if you took art classes or use references or make photomanipulations, you're a cheater, but it's not cheating- it's not like you're stealing art XD and how the hell else would you learn? I don't see why people shame those who want to learn more and broaden their horizons?

Holy crap, this piece is awesome!
You did a perfect work with the water And well, everything I could say about the horse would be less than what it deserves. It is simply gorgeous! *-*
