Suddenly finding themselves surrounded by empty lands, many Afghans took the opportunity to escape their war-ravaged homeland with no impediments in their way. Subsequent migration boosted the numbers of those living outside Afghanistan's former borders, eventually leading to the establishment of multiple states in both the east and west. Most prominent of these are Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, who have become beacons of (comparative) prosperity and thus are increasingly seeing their titular ethnicities joined by people from across the Afghan world. With the supply of foreign aid and weapons cut off, the fighting which had become an almost constant feature of life dipped for a period as civil war cooled into a stalemate of sorts with a Tajik-dominated government in Kabul and a Pashtun, Islamist government in Kandahar. A lasting peace was elusive however, with low level fighting continuing along the de facto border using a mixture of old and newly manufactured weapons. The Shia Hazaras, long oppressed by Afghan governments of all colours, and unable to establish their own state due to geographic limitations, began pressuring Kabul for greater autonomy. The central government though was concerned with their desire to "re-unite" the country, and thus began the latest insurgency in Afghanistan.
