Description
Not sure how much use anyone would be able to get out of this, but I love it when others put up some cosplay/craft tutorials rather than keeping it some kind of trade secret. Also, the hat on the bottom right is for the character of Kijin from Yami no Matsuei (manga). A friend is considering cosplaying him and I wanted to try making the hat.
Update: You can apply the nail-polish effect to the backs of the fake plastic gems from Michael's or any craft store, as long as it's clear and has a flat back.

Mmmm... I have a whole bag of these sitting on the floor of my bedroom... Looks like I've got to go shopping for more nailpolish. I wonder if it would work as well with other colors. I'm thinking light and icy...

If you'd like to get bigger gems, you can make them! Get some paint trays, some mold release (vaseline works if you're on a budget crunch), and clear acrylic. Michael's sells it (where I bought mine). Since I have not made the gems myself, I'll send you to the gem tutorial site here [link]
I'm sure you could just make the gems clear rather than dye them and then do this method to make HUGE opals ^^. I might try this one out myself >3

The one without foil looks pretty, and the foil dark one looks more real, but I like the lighter one.

Me too, and it's more in line of what I need for the costume so I'm using the more swirly lighter one.

Just a note about Kijin's hair; if I'm not mistaken, his father, Sohryu once mentioned that his hair is blue in colour, not red ^^

Yeah, no worries, that's just a stock wig that I put on top of model-head. It's not the actual hair that will be used.

Very nice tutorial... but... I don't get the foil part
If you put in on before the painting... you won't see the colors... But if you put in on after... You won't see the foil?
Anyway, I'm going to try this sometime :3 I believe we have tons of those kind of beads.

The foil is most helpful when there are chipped off parts from the nail polish (so it shows "clear" and the clear parts will show the foil and look like it's almost glowing from the inside). It's just optional though.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to think of using nail polish for gems! For my attempt though, I ended up using colored plastic ones, and managed to change the colours to surprisingly nice hues.

Hey wow, how fantastic of you to pop up tips and a tute! Especially for those of us living down south, where we dont HAVE conventions - not real ones - so everyone who ever tries to dress up looks boring or dorky because nobody has the experience or skills needed to pick up the quality and impress others and thereby increase further attendance at later events.
Looks great! Thanks again!

Hey, that's totally cool. And I'm glad that you felt like sharing, because I often wonder the same thing, if it's just one big huge "trade sekrit" that no one else is supposed to know. [laughs]
Keep up the good work and good luck on your cosplay pieces! :>
