Description There I go, had to jump on the bandwagon again.

1) Leo Ortolani: a recent influence, but I worship his sense of humour and comedic timing in comics.

2) Donna Barr: one of the first small press artist I discovered. Her, Dave Sim and Gerhard (Cerebus), Jeff Smith, made me discover that B&W comics can have a strong life and should not be dismissed!
It also gave me hope about doing comics, since I absolutely suck at doing colors, ha ha!

3) Bowie: the only musical artist that I have followed through the years, of whom I have all the albums, seen all the movies. Yes, even that spaghetti western one (Il Mio West).

4) Asterix: Grew up with the books.

5) Avatar; The Last Airbender: Look at my gallery. 'Nuff said (thank you, *PonDeReplay for this pic)

6) Mysterious Cities Of Gold: The first animated series I saw that blended adventure, a continuing story line and historical elements. My love for it hasn't diminished.

7) Gotlib- Grew up with his books (Rubrique Γ€ Brac). Fabulous artist, another one whose comedic I adore. I have sudden flashback of his work every so often.

8) La Foire Aux Immortels (Bilal): First adult bandes dessinΓ©es I read. Made me realise there was a world beyond all ages comics. You could read comics BEYOND your teenage years!! YES!!!!

9) Everyone I ever worked with!: That one feels like a cop out, but it's true! And it's not just people I worked with: if I've ever commented on your art, you can bet there's something in your work I've tried to walk away with. There's lesson to be learned everywhere.

10) Le Roman De Renart: A serie of short medieval tales. From an illustrated book I read as a child to actual old french texts with translation, I've always been close to it.

11) Ancient Egypt and history: very often at the base of many stories I try to tell. I said try!!

Yes, David Bowie is so amazing!! Labyrinth has to be my favorite movie of all time, which is sad for someone of my generation... but David Bowie as Jareth? Gotta love that!

Asterix et Obelix FTW!! They really are better in the original French! My grandparents have my dad and uncle's full collection, I read them every time I'm over there!!!

I'm gonna have to look into some of these others!

(cries tears of ineffable joy)

Mysterious Cities of Gold. THAT'S the name of the show that made me love cartoons!

Here's the thing: I saw SOME of this show while spending a week at my grandparents home, in another state, more than twenty years ago.
We didn't have the same television channels at home, and since I was very young, I couldn't remember the name of the show that had transfixed me utterly. I never saw it again, but the theme song has, no joke, been running through my head off and on for two decades and change. But for some reason, I've never seen an image of it, or heard reference to it since that day.

I think I'd half convinced myself that I dreamed the whole thing. This show is the reason that I understood while growing up that animation could be used to tell stories, not just show animals injuring themselves in spectacular ways, but except for that one week so long ago, it's been nothing more then a vague impression of a golden ship and the notes of a song.

Rufftoon, thank you so much for putting that image up for me to randomly stumble across. I'm actually crying a little bit as I type this... You've really, really made my day.

And now I'm off to watch some Hulu videos and buy a DVD set.

I remember waking up extremely early in the morning to watch the Mysterious Cities of Gold.
The great opening sequence and the continuing storyline, kept me coming back for more. Watching that show made me realize that you could have a group of kids in an animated program that you cared about and that they were on a "real adventure/ mission" that had "real" consequences if they didn't arrive first to the cities of Gold before the Spaniards.
Thanks for reminding me.

Holy Cats, David Bowie did a spaghetti western?? Wonder if my sister knows about that...LOL [although my challenge is this...have you seen/owned/whatever the edited, or unedited version of 'Man who Fell to Earth'? hee] I think I still have my sister's laserdisc version of 'The Hunger', I really should get it back to her some day.

He had a very small role in "Il Mio West", but yeah. Not a very good film.
Yup! I have seen the long version of "The Man Who Fell To Earth". Haven't seen the Hunger in years.
Nor "The Linguini Incident".

i'm so excited you mentioned Cities of Gold! the Avatar series has constantly reminded me of it; i feel like Nickelodeon is repeating it's success from the 80's. even though i hadn't been born yet, i have my older sister to thank for obsessively saving everything on VHS, and because of her i fell in love with the show, although no one else my age is really aware of it.
but both Mysterious Cities and Avatar stand out to me in the world of kid's cartoon shows because they both have respectable animation and a good story line that hasn't been watered down for younger audiences. i wish there were more shows like them.

Wow ! That's an cosmopolite map of inspiration. Geez ! I never thought I would find Gotlib here, but this guy is a genius, and old friend of Gosciny by the way, until they had a very bad argument about some of Gotlib works... Those two wrote "Les dingodossiers" and it is quite excellent (actually I prefer that from Rubric a brac, but it is a very personal and subjectif point of view).

Did AstΓ©rix influence you a lot more then the others ? Is that why the image from Le Domaine des Dieux takes so much more space then the others ? Or is that a coincidence ? Anyway, I love so much of these projects. It seems to be a good reason to why I watch for your work, you were influenced by many of the things I adore. Yay for le Roman de Renart !

I followed one course on Ancient Egypt, just an intro one. It was really fun. Lasted just one session, but I have found memory of it.
Brace yourself to learn a few extra languages, especially if you're seriously going for egyptology: Arab is a plus if you're going to work in that country, german for all the reference literature, and a few others beside.
Plus learning to read hieroglyphs
It can be loads of fun!!

brook-chan In reply to rufftoon [2010-08-29 13:57:57 +0000 UTC]

I've been trying to learn Arabic for a year and a half now T.T its hard. But I'm very determined. Your so lucky that you got to take a course! The collage I'm at doesn't have anything like that. SO the closet thing i can get to that is Art history ,which it isn't bad. I didn't know about the German thing thanks for letting me know ><
