Description
There I go, had to jump on the bandwagon again.1) Leo Ortolani: a recent influence, but I worship his sense of humour and comedic timing in comics.
2) Donna Barr: one of the first small press artist I discovered. Her, Dave Sim and Gerhard (Cerebus), Jeff Smith, made me discover that B&W comics can have a strong life and should not be dismissed!
It also gave me hope about doing comics, since I absolutely suck at doing colors, ha ha!
3) Bowie: the only musical artist that I have followed through the years, of whom I have all the albums, seen all the movies. Yes, even that spaghetti western one (Il Mio West).
4) Asterix: Grew up with the books.
5) Avatar; The Last Airbender: Look at my gallery. 'Nuff said (thank you, *PonDeReplay for this pic)
6) Mysterious Cities Of Gold: The first animated series I saw that blended adventure, a continuing story line and historical elements. My love for it hasn't diminished.
7) Gotlib- Grew up with his books (Rubrique À Brac). Fabulous artist, another one whose comedic I adore. I have sudden flashback of his work every so often.
8) La Foire Aux Immortels (Bilal): First adult bandes dessinées I read. Made me realise there was a world beyond all ages comics. You could read comics BEYOND your teenage years!! YES!!!!
9) Everyone I ever worked with!: That one feels like a cop out, but it's true! And it's not just people I worked with: if I've ever commented on your art, you can bet there's something in your work I've tried to walk away with. There's lesson to be learned everywhere.
Art in this panel by the hyper talented Ben Balistreri

10) Le Roman De Renart: A serie of short medieval tales. From an illustrated book I read as a child to actual old french texts with translation, I've always been close to it.
11) Ancient Egypt and history: very often at the base of many stories I try to tell. I said try!!

Oh wow, I can't really say!. Asterix et Cléopatre is still up there, but also Astérix chez les Helvètes, Astérix et le chaudron...too many really. Many of the old ones had golden moments.
Apologies for giving just the french titles, that's how I read them originally.

Astérix chez les Helvètes (Asterix in Switzerland) Was also my favourite too. I think the older ones had better storylines.
Did you ever see the Asterix et Cléopatre animation?

I have seen all the Asterix animated films. Interesting to see the evolution of the style over the years.
I've also seen two of the live action films. The first one is "meh" the second one (Mission Cleopatre) is excellent and the third one I haven't seen.

I watched the live action films in dubbed but it kind of ruined the movie a bit.
I should find a version with subtitles.

Heey, all hail Gotlib! And Bilal! wow! . Franco-belgian comics fans, gather and daaaaance!
You know what? when I'll make my influence map (10 years from now, when I'm rich and famous), you'll be on it! I love your work!

Ha ha, no need to wait ten years and be rich and famous. There are influences all around you right now (and no, that's not so I can appear on it).
It's a good introspection exercise.

Well, i did quite the same the first time.
I asked him a stupid question but he gladly answer me even if it was a really stupid question ! XD
Then i calm down and we talked a bit about his idea about next story for Rat-Man ! XD
That was 2007 i think, then i met him back again in 2009.
It's pretty easy to find him in Italian Comic Convenction.

Asterix! There were quite a few of the books in my house so I read them when I was a kid, along with the majority of the Tintin stories.

I have read all the TinTin books too (and Lucky Luke, and Spirou), but I think it is Asterix that stayed with me the most.

There were many Astérix animated films done over the years, plus a few live action ones!
(the best of the live action ones has to be Astérix: Mission Cléopatre. Ignore the others.)

If you've read Astérix, the chances are good you've read many of the other great franco-belgian books: TinTin, Spirou, Lucky Luke, Les Tuniques Bleues, etc...
Gotlib was definitely high up there with the rest of them.

clover-comics In reply to rufftoon [2010-08-22 21:41:22 +0000 UTC]
Yes, they've all had a big importance in my childhood. (I don't remember reading Tintin alot though. Three or four albums at the most.)
I remember not getting any of Gotlib's jokes when just a kid. Never understood why my father laughed so much reading them.. now I do
Another hilarious franco-belgian book is Le Chat by Geluck, don't know if you've read any?

Your influence map is so great and ..surprising as well! I really didn't think there could be so many French works in it^^
Asterix and Gotlib are really awesome references^^ Le Roman de Renart is a fantastic book as well, my father read it to me when I was a child, there was no illustrations though (but I made plenty of fanarts XD) and La Foire aux Immortels had the same impact on me when I discovered it in my teen years, I really got amazed by the mix of seriousness and absurd in the whole trilogy (the chess-boxing in Froid Équateur was a priceless concept, I can't believe it became an actual game )

Growing up in french Québec, most of the books of my childhood came from Europe. I barely read anything from the US at the time.
As for La Foire Aux Immortels, I was always fascinated by the hyper violent hockey game.
Eh, Canadian.

So you speak French? I'm French, that's why I knew those books (doesn't it feel silly to be speaking in a foreign language and realize you share your mother tongue?)
I recall the hokey game was really stunning with absurd violence, the whole atmosphere created by Bilal is just creepy (and it's so cool...)

LoL i had the Asterix too.. They are gold.. back when I was small because My dad used to collect them. Classic simple coloring and funny nonviolent comics. Used to see people getting punched into the air with their shoes still on the ground....

I wonder how some parents would view these books today, with all the cartoony violence. Would they label them non-violent? I don't know.
I still love them though!

Purpleground02 In reply to rufftoon [2010-08-23 01:00:59 +0000 UTC]
Well... I donno about comic, but manga already been exceeding the gruesome level. Plus, with other entertainment like games GTA (mafia with guns), God of war (seeing head tearing off is pretty common) and so on running around, i think this could be one of the non-violence media (which involves fighting) they can find, aside from fairy tales and children' comic book. I mean, it involves punches and so on, but there is no blood, no very tensed emotion, or showing any sights of bruises other than a black eye, with many stars above the head..... And it ain't as silly & disgusting as "Cow and Chicken", "I am weasel", "Grimm".. if you know what that is...
