Description NOTE! DOWLOAD FOR FULL SIZE!

* Fixing in post refers to post-production. Post production is everything that happens after filming: editing, music, sound fx, visual fx, etc. Everything that needs to be cut and put together for the final film.

A little follow up to the previous page.

Not so much discussion about storyboards, but wondering why certain choices were made.
Could it be the movie had to make budget choices?

Everything here is just pure speculation, of course.

I took a course in film production in college, and even with a limted budget...there are more creative ways to handle filmmaking than using on-site scenery...even LOTR used large miniature models for pan shots.

There are definitely ways to cheat your environment when you film. I don't know them very well, since I mostly deal with animation and we just...well, draw everything.

lol, so does drawing equate to cheating? XD

More like drawings allow cheating.

Bwahahahah! Once again you take a bad situation and make it hilarious. I tip my hat too you.

Incidentally, I really love your interpretation of Movie!Firebenders. They look much better drawn in this style then in live action. Keep 'em coming!

... random question... is it true that some of the creators of the ATLA cartoon series worked with smamalan on the movie? my friend said that there is a scene in the DVD where they are all together talking about how great shooting the movie is going.

just seeing if he is lying to me... he likes to lie to me... so hurtful..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rufftoon In reply to MasqueNoMercy [2010-08-16 17:35:18 +0000 UTC]

The DVD scene is real- however, it was filmed BEFORE any work on the movie happened.
I can't talk for the creators, but their movie credit lists them as executive producers.
Here is a description:
"An executive producer of a motion picture is typically a producer who is sometimes involved with a property that has since been optioned into a film, but has no direct input into the creative process of the film itself. For example, authors of optioned literary works sometimes get an executive producer credit on films made from their work."
If anything, they may have done a bit of consulting. I don't know the details.
So your friend didn't lie to you about the DVD scene. But claiming the creators worked on the film with Shyamalan may be stretching it.

Pfft, post production is key, but if you don't have good material to start with, then no matter how much editing you do, it'll still never be great. You can only get out what you put in :/

Personally, I think that M.Night needs to take on less roles. Either be the director, or the script writer, or the producer, and not all three. The movie was very "stale", and the camera angles seemed like they were ill advised, or directed by someone who didn't have enough experience with action films. Very sad D;

rufftoon In reply to Seroph [2010-08-16 17:36:04 +0000 UTC]

Very true.
It will be interesting to see how his movie "Devil" is received, since all he is credited with is the writing, not the directing.

Hopefully it'll be better? I don't plan on seeing it, of course, but it's always fun to watch the results from afar. Hopefully cutting down on his hand in the movie will help him do the one thing better.

I figured since the Earthbenders were in a rock camp, the bending in the movie just isn't that powerful... I mean, how much bending was there in that movie compared to the show? The huge lack of bending is what made me sad the most while watching the movie. I mean, it's a whole new concept to explore, why not use/overuse it a little?

rufftoon In reply to FrOoTcAkE [2010-08-16 17:36:55 +0000 UTC]

rufftoon In reply to ShavingSheep [2010-08-16 16:42:19 +0000 UTC]

The movie has to go through post production anyway. It's part of the normal process so is already included in the cost.
Reshooting whole scenes can be expensive!

So gloriously fun.

I have to wonder, did anyone else catch the moment in the big Northern Water Tribe Fight Scene, I think it was right after the Moon Spirit was killed--Aang doubled over with a han on his forehead. They thought they could outsmart us, be we knew--Voldemort was near, and Aang's lightning bolt scar was telling him so.
(All around, people fighting, no one notices Aang, even when he's one good shot away from unconsciosness/death.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rufftoon In reply to ElaineRose [2010-08-16 17:29:32 +0000 UTC]

It kind of went over my head a bit, since even in the original episode we saw people reacting to the disappearance of the moon.
Of course, blaming Voldemort is more fun.

I'm sure the Fire Nation soldiers did notice Aang. They're just a bit slow on the reaction time, as has been established in previous shots
