Description This is Amagumo my pet Budgie! His name means “Heavenly Cloud” (天雲). The tree he is sitting in is Acer rubrum, or the red maple. It is a tree native to the area in which I live. I thought actually drawing him in his cage would be too boring, which is why I drew him in a tree.

Anyway, this is my entry for the Happy Budgie Home Contest ([link] ). I hope you enjoy it.

Edit: (September 28, 2010); Amagumo passed away, thus making this picture a memorial to him.

Materials: graphite pencil (4H and 6H), Micron pens (08, 05, 03, 02, 01, and 005), Crayola Supertip Washable Markers, Bristol board (9 in. x 12 in.)

Please Critique: composition, coloring, anatomy

This is beautiful. The inks look great and the colours really bring it to life. One thing I would recommend about your colouring though is to slow it down a little, the strokes are really noticeable in some places though other parts look really smooth.

That's all I can really think to critique as I don't know much about bird anatomy and the colours you used look amazing together. The shadows look great as well.

Your bird must have been beautiful, I'm sorry he's gone. I think this is a good tribute to him (even though you did it before he died e.deviantart.net/emoticons/i/i… " width="19" height="19" alt="" title="Slow"/>).

Thank you for the critique.

I suppose I could have done more to keep the streaking down. I usually try to blame the streaking all on the poor quality of the water-based markers I used. It is true that they do streak a lot, which is one of the reasons they are so inferior to alcohol-based ones, but I suppose I could have colored in a circular pattern more. It definitely would have minimized the streaking. I will remember your advice in the future.

Do not worry about not knowing bird anatomy to well. Anatomy can be a hard subject, and birds have a more bazaar body plan which makes theirs that much harder to learn.
