He’s got issues. Evil Gill accidentally killed Cradle in their struggle during Order 66. Gill’s prior fears of the Dark Side, though beaten down through hard work, encouragement from his teachers and Cradle, and experience, would come rushing back. He would believe that he was destined for the Dark Side after all, that he’d let his fear take over and he’d killed Cradle because of it, and he was lost forever. With no one to pull him back from the brink, he would grasp the fear and anger and hatred—both for the Force and himself—and he would fling himself headlong into it. He was lost, and with no belief that he could come back from his fatal mistake, it would be easier to embrace the darkness that try to live with it lingering at his ear forever.
