I've always wondered, how do you break down a sculpture into pieces for molding?
does the armature need to be able to come apart as well?

Good question . Β You can , from the start , make the armature with kinda joints. Β So when you cut the piece later it will come apart nicely . Β But that is not an exact science. It can happen , more often than not , that the joint Β is not exactly there were you want it . After all the sculpting , I mean .
Soo, you can go the other way : make no joints and simply cut the sculpture , with saws or cutting discs , after all the sculpting is done , and then make Β male female Β joints / keys .
I used both ways . It mostly depends on the situation / pose of the figure .
In other words , it varies . Β

I guess you need a pretty fine saw to cut these things.
