The first of the dedicated anti-missile ships and the last of the vertically-launched spacecraft, the Andrew Jackson was designed to be simple and easy to manufacture. Between its introduction and the Collapse, the American Empire manufactured hundreds of thousands of these ships to escort its battlefleets and it has since fallen into the hands of countless groups throughout the galaxy.
The Andrew Jackson represents the end of an era: that of ground-manufactured, vertically-launched spacecraft. The "legs" of the spacecraft were intended to be reusable, but with the ubiquity of orbital stations many have removed the legs. The eight EMSEL cannons the Andrew Jackson is armed with are designed with point-defense; the Andrew Jackson's purpose is to defend the larger battleships and cruisers from enemy missiles. Consequently, the Andrew Jackson is not equipped with supplies for independent patrol, relying on the rest of the battlefleet for oxygen, consumables and fuel. It is not even equipped with its own oxygen scrubbers. This has not stopped various groups from creating enlarged or elongated versions of the ship designed for long voyages.
Because of the massive numbers manufactured by the Empire and other groups, the Andrew Jackson is the second most common warship in the galaxy, second only to the Soviet Stukov frigate. While the Coalition and Conseil only use the Andrew Jacksonwith planetary militias it is the backbone of many fleets in the galaxy. The ship is also popular with pirates and other criminal organizations because parts are easy to repair, find and manufacture. Many Andrew Jacksons have been repurposed as missiles, transports, satellites and probes, normally by smaller states such as Batavia or the Kassel Confederation.
