Despite the Interstellar Coalition’s wishes, it is constantly at war against its more powerful neighbors. However cynical its government may have become over the centuries, it retains an idealistic façade, both for the galactic community and its own people. As a result, the Coalition calls its mainline troops “peacekeepers.” Unique for a galactically significant power, the Coalition’s frontline troops include young adolescents and xeno troops. While the Coalition likes to brag about this as an example of their society’s inclusive nature, critics point out that this is a cynical means to bolster its troop numbers in the face of numerically superior opponents.

Many Coalition Peacekeepers are young volunteers, influenced by decades of propaganda to fight for the ideals embodied in the Coalition Charter. They view war as a heroic adventure, where they can test their mettle against merciless but crude opponents. Many Peacekeepers break in the face of the true horror of war, becoming irreparably shattered in body, mind and spirit. While this may not be a problem in ancient societies such as the Empire and the Federation, which have had millennia to deal with the societal consequences of interstellar war, the young Coalition may face a titanic societal shift that its state apparatus is not prepared for.
