The sons of Imperial nobility inevitably end up serving as an officer in the Imperial military in some capacity, but only firstborns and the highly regarded are allowed by their families to serve as Navy officers. These sons, protected because of their importance to succession, are thus protected in the relatively safe Imperial Navy. But the Army needs officers too, and these positions are often filled by younger sons, or those who have otherwise disgraced their name and are no longer part of their family’s line of succession.

Because of the recruiting pressures on Imperial Army officers, their quality varies. Some are drunks, crazed, lazy, unambitious, or plagued by other vices that led to their disgrace in the first place. Many of these officers carry their vices into the service, and are thus responsible for many of the Imperial Army’s most embarrassing failures. Others, eager to prove themselves to their families, go above and beyond the call of duty. The fortunate among them do go on to earn their familial holdings, while the most fortunate earn renown even with the Throne.

Army officers, like any other Imperial soldier, are entitled to land on any world conquered by their unit, with officers being granted noble status on a new world. While these gains vary in greatness, they are an aspiration for any Imperial Army officer, and so the Imperial Army is filled with officers always itching for another war of conquest. While the great conquests of tens of thousands of star systems have been prevented by the Tournament of Shadows, wars over rediscovered, ill-defended, or rebellious worlds happen every day. The Empire always has a battlefield where an officer can enrich himself.

So the officers get free land after conquest of a planet, what about the members of the Poor Bloody Infantry do they get a chance of a piece of real estate to settle down on?  or it it a bit like the old trade union song

We're the first ones to starve, we're the first ones to die
The first ones in line for that pie-in-the-sky
And we're always the last when the cream is shared out
For the worker is working when the fat cat's about

And when the sky darkens and the prospect is war
Who's given a gun and then pushed to the fore
And expected to die for the land of our birth
Though we've never owned one lousy handful of earth?

Or do they get used as intergalactic bullet fodder?

It depends on the specific war. If it’s a new world, usually infantry get some land.
