While you're right it's not entirely a "tutorial", if the step-by-step tutorials you're used to are anything like the "how to draw" books that only teach how to draw a specific image then that would be worse when it comes to developing art skills as they rarely have any real art theory in them. 

 This tutorial is intended for people who already know what they're doing as opposed to absolute beginners who might benefit a bit by having words describing brushes used etc. 

 Just by looking at this I can see their thought pattern and how they're thinking about the way the light will be bent by the glass and water. It is a useful tutorial, but only if the person viewing it has done the groundwork necessary to understand what's going on in the image.

Thanks for responding. I guess I'm frustrated because, a lot of people responded to what I said telling me that "it's not for beginners."

Well, even so, how are people defining a beginner? I don't consider myself a beginner when it comes to drawing. But yet I don't know too much about Photoshop or SAI. I've picked up some tips along the way but even with the stuff I do know, this tutorial doesn't tell me anything.

Maybe I am a beginner to some people, but I find that a bit insulting, because I didn't just pick up drawing yesterday. (The art on my own gallery is a bad example of the work I can actually do, heh.) So when I see tuorials like this I feel pushed away because I'm not already part of this elite club of people who know exactly what to do.

And on that know, if you already know what they're doing just by looking at the process, how is that even helpful to you? You obviously already know what you're doing and don't need a tutorial to begin with.

 Well people can always be an expert at drawing and still be a beginner at digital. There are certainly lots of differences between digital and traditional, and between Sai and Photoshop. In the previous tutorials they said they used Paint Tool Sai for all of it except for sharpening the image right at the end which they did in PS.

 If you do have PS and would like to improve your digital skills, then I suggest you look at this website: matt-kohr.squarespace.com/libr… (It's called Ctrl+Paint)

 Even though the site is based on teaching beginners, it was still worth me going through it as there were some gaps I found in my art theory that I just hadn't paid attention to in my art classes during school. That and it helped me a lot to figure out how PS works as a drawing material as I didn't know how to really use it for drawing.

 Because it shows me how they do things. It's different from how I'd do it and that is where I find the value in it. If I only looked at tutorials that were the same as the way I already do things then there really would be no point.

It's obviously not for you beginners then. I can see what's going on without even the need to ask. Any other artist with a good grasp of any art program can work something like this easily.

There is no point in learning if everything is laid out in front of you. Make mistakes, analyze, experiment, observe, study, use the wrong tools and programs etc. Only then you'll figure out what works and what doesn't. Tutorials like these are good because you're forced to think more. You're forced to figure out on your own, how did they got to such result.

People take tutorials too much for granted. In my mind, tutorials make you lazy, you don't have to think just follow couple of steps and hours of work is done with half the time. I never had anything like this when I learned to draw. I only had my pencils, old anatomy book and free to use brain...the anatomy book never explained how to draw muscles or bones, what pencils to use and what paper is the best. It just showed what andwhere they are, all the rest is mine to work out.

People always want everything as easy, effortless and simple as possible. One can never become good artist if all they want is easy. Art should never be easy. Good art needs work, effort and hours and hours of practicing.

I understand your point about tutorials making some people lazy, but it doesn't make any sense why you're saying that in the first place. This was labelled as a tutorial, and tutorials are meant to teach and to help. If you're concerned with people learning on their own so much, why have any kind of tutorial in the first place?

To me, this is not a tutorial at all, it's simply someone showing their WIPs and the final result. I'm all for learning on my own, but if you're going to make a tutorial in the first place, make it an actual tutorial that teaches you with actual directions or advice. That's all I was getting at.

If you’re expecting an easy answer from every single lesson, that is laziness. This tutorial is meant to make you think and analyze on your own. If you cannot see the value in it, then this is probably not for you. The author already gave part of her hard work as a free lesson, I see it very ungrateful to complain about this not matching someones’ ideals.

There are plenty of tutorials that walk you through every single step. If this is your choice for learning, then you have the option to do so, but you cannot expect all tutorial authors to follow your ways.

It always annoys me so much to see him putting stuff up as tutorials while they're obviously walkthroughs. People should get their terms right. That or he should actually teach us stuff.

She didn't call herself a teacher... people commission her for things like this to help them. They already know what the steps are going to look like, so if it was that big a problem, they would ask for text with the steps. Calm down...

But still, I really like them. Maybe its not really a tutorial, but still you see the steps he takes, so it kind of still is a tutorial.
