Description
[Edit: 2015-6-19] This doodle was featured on the Microsoft Studios blog ! A really disproportionately big honour for this small piece, but I'm very thankful nonethelessI've been following the game Ori and the Blind Forest for quite a while now, mostly because the artistic/visual and storytelling aspect of it looked marvelous.
I was very reluctant to buy it, for many reasons but mostly because I'd been saving free time and money for other things. Now that I'm a bit more adjusted to life in a new country and the workload I have now, I can save a bit of free time every weekend to relax and blow off some steam.
I bought the game yesterday but only played today, and I must say, every aspect of it is fantastic. I'm a big sucker for artsy games, platformers and Studio Ghibli-like atmosphere, and from the concept art to the mechanics to the soundtrack of Ori, I can't get enough of it.
This speedy, sketchy fanart isn't doing it much justice, but I wanted to make something quickly.

// I'm honestly in love with this beautiful 2D game!
Packed up with emotions, wonderful grafic as well the super cute Charakters just have inspired me. Especially the sad moment between Ori and Naru had just touched me.
You really did a great Job with this wonderful drawing~! <3

Thank you! To be honest, I didn't work on this one as much as I could have, but I wanted to draw it while the emotions were still fresh :')
I cried during the game intro, and every time I come across a zone or soundtrack that's especially beautiful I feel like crying again xD
This game is precious.
By the way, I love your Ori fanart! Especially the fan comic. I can't believe how much detail each page has! ;ω;

// Well, it's still pretty good for something you've didn't spend that much time on :3
Oh dear, I also had to cry as I've seen the intro, it was super sad! ;_;
And these Soundtracks, so good!<3 My favourite soundtrack's the Kuro escape from the Horu Mountain. xD
But the game also had some .... annoying zones, like the escape from the Gimson Tree. Damn that was difficult x'D
Aww thank you ;3
Oh well, I'm still thinking about the next pages for the Comic. It's not that easy thought, because I don't want to ruin the game's feeling because of my fan Comic xD
There will be some OC's thought, such as enemies which are called 'Sphinxies', and my main OC Aria. You can find their Information in my journals <3

Ugg, those escape segments are really annoying. The worst part is that my current PC is really old and I get random lag while playing Dx
To be honest, the feel of your comic so far reflects the game really well and the aesthetic is spot on. It looks like it could be an actual sequel to the story.
In short, good luck with it. I'm sure it will be fantastic. ٩(๑•◡-๑)۶

// Oh dear, yes they are~ ._.
I've spend, dunno to much time on one of these escape segments, and it didn't needed long yet until I would have table flipped xD
Well, thank you for having hope in that x'D x3
I'm seriously trying my best on it~!^^

Anyways, what do you think what Ori's gender could be?

Mmm, in the official website, Moon Studios peeps use "him" pronouns for him, so if Ori has a gender, it's probably male or at least on the boy side.
Personally, I don't think forest spirits need genders at all xD

// Yeah xD
I personally think that Ori's a Boy, since the name 'Ori' is based on a boy's Name. Also his Body structure shows rather a male-like one instead of a female, even tought Ori's created genderless. Also if the creators told that Ori's gender was deliberately left to be open to player Interpretation.^^
On the other side, it wouldn't make any sense to let Ori stay genderless, if the deceased light Spirits, which Ori's about to experience through his journey, had genders. Take an example on Leru, the dead Spirit with the double jump ability, Leru was a she, and so had the others a gender. So why Ori 'genderless?' xD

I hadn't thought about the other spirits. That's a really good point.
I think the objective of leaving Ori without an "official" gender, as opposed to the other spirits who have genders, is so that the player can identify completely with the character during the story. And it works! I call Ori "he" because that's what I see the artists who worked on the game call him, but I've seen some female players call Ori "she".
I myself live a very LGBT-filled life, so over time I got used to not think or care too much about people's genders, and that has affected the way I see characters as well. But each to their own ;3

// I can agree on this Point.
See, I'm a female too, but thinks that Ori might be a male. It's just from my sight how he acts during the game. Others who describe Ori as a 'she', might be possibly about Ori's voice sound. If you ever listened to his sounds, as Ori for example surfaced up from the water, he makes a really cute air catching sound which sound rather like a female instead of a male. But who says, that males don't might have cute voices as well? They're spirits, soo everything's possible xD
Hmm .. nah, I'm a Person who has to know about the gender of any character. For the case that I can explain better. xD

I don't know what, other than his squeaky voice, makes some players think he's a girl (he is quite young, and all children have high-pitched voices xD). But it's an interesting opinion nonetheless.
I wonder how you handle characters who can change genders, because while I find them fun, it's so annoying to talk about them and not know how to describe them!

// Ikr?? xD
But I personally think that Ori's not a child anymore^^' But doesn't matter xD
It's still not a reason to call Ori an female because of his voice.
My version for female Guardian Spirits they'll have a single, long eyelash on their eyes, and a regular more slender body structure than the males. [ unless they're already born to be fat ] XD
Take an example of my OC Aria :'D
Same here.

Maybe Ori is in his late teens and his voice is cracking, don't judge him xD
In all seriousness, fan probably put more thought into character's genders than the creators themselves.
I saw Aria, and I think you did a wonderful job to make her look feminine without being over-the-top or cartoonish :3

// omg that one killed me now!! X'DDD
Yeah I guess so too. I personally always put into the actings like the character itself, how it feels, how it attacks, seriously.
Thank you~!
Yeah, I tried to make her as real as possible!
If you need more informations about her, you can find them in my Journal under 'Ori and the Blind Forest OC Aria Info' x3

It is x)
I love how the game's developers describe it as a "love letter" to various other games and movies. Some of the parallels I caught are how Ori's adopted mum, Naru, resembles Totoro, and Ori himself looks like the Kodama from Princess Mononoke (the whole forest, with its various spirits, reminded me strongly of that movie).
I haven't gotten to this part yet, but I heard there is a Water Temple level that's just as frustrating as the one in LoZ: Ocarina of Time xD
