Description Half of what made the TF such a great thing was the toys. Though I LOVE the cartoon renditions of all the characters (those cartoon renditions are what made them human, with their smooth human facial features, something that BayFormers missed out on ENTIRELY...), I still love how the toys showed the minds of the toy creators' vision that they are VERY very robotic.

This is a tribute to the original G1 Minibot toys in all their glory. Minibots FRVR!

Random note: I even preserved their positioning on the original G1 product pamphlet.

Me too... though not exactly my childhood XD!

And I've been looking through your drawings and it's like a G1 art museum . They're all so good!

Thanks for checking this out!
I saw the toy art after I drew this, I think I recall the hands were a little different there. Who knows what they were thinking with these hands, hehe!
I still need to do a G1 version of this same pic.

I think you captured the original toy artwork of the G1 Minibots really well. It almost fits your style of flat no line art colouring which I like it when you do that. I very much agree on your comments, for me every time I look back on the old toy artwork I'm still blown away because it is still professional for it's time and even today. Really dig the perspective you gave the classic Minibots, this picture makes me so proud to own the Minobots as they are so cool to play and find inspiration from! Well done ryuzo!

Does the color look flat? I usually put in several tones, though they are subtle.

Thanks for the comments! The minibots really were affordable and were full of life and fun!

They are flat but I can see the painted strokes which blend in nicely, as you say with those tones.

My pleasure! That is true and still worth it!

I was never a fan of the toys. I remember being annoyed with the people who made the toys because they put more effort into the car/ vehicle than the robot. They weren’t pretty enough for me hehe

ryuzo In reply to convallaria [2012-07-21 15:14:31 +0000 UTC]

That's true...the toys weren't as pretty.
Nowadays, they have found a way to make both the cars and toys pretty. But something about the figure being too poseable makes for...kinduva repetitive feeling. Like the ball joint for the hips, the ball joint for the ankles...it seems like the robots lost some uniqueness of appearance...I mean, you're totally right -- some of those old robots were NOT pretty, but their ugliness made them more lovable!

Yeah- you’re right. It does make them more lovable.
I work in a secondhand shop and when I (extremely rarely) come across an old transformers toy, I go all nostalgic. New toys doesn’t bring out that feel in me…

But I think it would also be bad if they put more effort into the robot than the vehicle. Cybertron Metroplex might be the worst offender, his vehicle mode looks like he's just doing joga! And I know some folks who dislike the modern figures because their vehicle modes don't look like REAL cars anymore because licenses from the car companies would be so expensive nowadays...

oh darling- I know that now. But back in the 80 I cared more for dolls than cars.
