No problem, what lens, what aperture, what shutter speed? These are the questions that we should all be asking. How else are we to learn?

Unfortunately there are some on here who will not share this information but most people are only too willing to help. In fact it's by asking these questions that made me buy this lens in the first place

Mostly they are uncivil, surly people who doesn't like to help other, but luckly there are many helpful and kind people also.

Yeah, talking with some photographers it helps me to find the best camera, lens for me.

Did you use a long lens with a good zoom, or was this one tame? What kinda bird is it by the way?

s-kmp In reply to Vanessanon [2012-06-30 11:11:05 +0000 UTC]

I used my favourite lens the Canon EF 100mm Macro f2.8, so I was quite close to this captive bird. As for what type of bird it is, if you read the comments below you will see that several people have been trying to help with it's identification.

The favourite at the moment is a Red-billed Magpie

First of all, beautiful capture! Very crisp and vibrant, the details of the facial feathers is astounding

Second: as for the identification, I think ~turtle-rn got it right, bird does look like a Red-billed Blue Magpie (Urocissa erythrorhyncha). However, *namu-the-orca could be right too, albeit partially. It isn't a Common Blackbird, but the bird in this photo does look like being partially leucistic, hence the pied appearance. A third option I offer is that the bird in this picture could be a juvenile molting to its final plumage. Young birds often take mottled appearances while they get their adult plumage, but without the rest of the body is hard to tell. Hope this helps

Thank you so much, I'm really pleased with the level of detail that has remained in sharp focus (more by luck than skill though)

As for the identification, though, I'm clearly out of my league. Like I said before I really wish that I had taken a shot of the whole bird, it would have made identification so much easier (I normally take a shot of the whole bird first, no matter how bad just as a reference shot but in this case I was only interested in a close-up)

Thanks again for your efforts in helping to try to identify this bird

You're welcome!

Don't worry, I've been in that kind of situation too: sometimes one gets too wrapped up into getting a crisp shot of some piece of detail that you forget to capture the rest... and then can't remember what did the complete object look like XD
In the identification department... I'm not in my usual grounds either. I'm more acquainted with american birds than anything else and I hadn't seen this bird before. I had to search for good pictures for both the magpie and the blackbird to make a comparison before I decided to post my comment, hehe.
Anytime!

I'm going with Turtle-rn as well. Red billed blue magpie, especially because in the other photo the blue wings, and traces of the black hood are more visible. Also, they have been known to go mottled on their head like this : [link] and [link]

And if you look at the beak and eyerings, everything matches perfectly.

s-kmp In reply to violent-obsession [2012-06-29 05:54:31 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, it does look like a very good match. I don't remember a tail like that but then again I was only looking to get a very close-up shot of the head so I wasn't paying that much attention

Leaubellon In reply to ??? [2012-06-28 22:47:48 +0000 UTC]

I'm sorry, I have to disagree with Namu-the-orca, the beak is proportionally too short and thick for a Turdus species. Plus, based on the other photo, the head/body relative proportion is indicative of a more massive bird. My guess (especially on the second pic) is a Red Billed Magpie (Urocissa erythrorhyncha) with only a partial discoloration of the head. What is visible on the other pic suggests that the rest of the body is not affected.

Haha, well, you got me corrected there I already wasn't too sure about the beak shape or colour (though thought that one might be due to photoshop touch ups or so) and the bigger body shot also got me looking a bit weird, though bird knowledge was lacking to come up with another species. Thanks for the clear up: always good to learn something new!

Leaubellon In reply to namu-the-orca [2012-07-05 23:22:34 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome.
Actually, the biggest clue it wasn't a common blackbird is that not many wildlife parks would bother with that species.

namu-the-orca [2012-06-26 13:43:23 +0000 UTC]

I believe this is a Common blackbird (Turdus merula) [link] with a rare form of discolouration It's called leucism [link] and makes for an animal to go (partially) white, while still having normal beak and feet colour. Usually leucism either gives an animal some big white blotches, in rare cases turns them completely white, but sometimes also makes them piebald - as your bird. Some photos of piebals blackbirds: [link] [link] [link] [link] [link] [link] [link] [link]

Thank you so much for your very comprehensive response, together with such lovely examples of this condition. It's not what I would have expected but it certainly does fit with the shape of the bird, (difficult to see in this shot) the beak and the eye

You're very welcome It indeed was quite hard to determine with only the head showing, but I'm glad to hear it was similar to what you saw I do have a question though. Was the whole bird this white with only a few black specks or did it get darker overall more towards the tail? (as shown on the photos)

s-kmp In reply to namu-the-orca [2012-06-26 21:38:45 +0000 UTC]

I've up-loaded this [link] to help you to see more of the bird. Hope it helps.

I only took close-up shots of this bird because I was trying to get a shot for the 'Close-up' competition at the Birds-Club Group. So this is the best shot that I have of it that shows the whole bird. Hope this helps

namu-the-orca In reply to s-kmp [2012-06-27 10:18:01 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, it is an odd-looking bird for sure - such a shame you don't have more complete photos; I guess it would clear things up a bit I'm starting to doubt my initial ID. Let's see if someone else could come up with something better

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

s-kmp In reply to namu-the-orca [2012-06-27 19:53:46 +0000 UTC]

Yes it is an odd case, normally I would take a shot of the whole bird in it's environment as a reference shot but because I was specifically after a close-up shot I didn't get anything near showing the whole bird.

Thanks for taking the time to look and try to help
