Description A Carcharocles megalodon attacks a pair or Squalodon as they dive. The giant shark is followed closely by an escort of oceanic whitetip, blue and prehistoric mako sharks, which will feed on the scraps of the megalodon's kill, and perhaps even the smaller of the two Squalodon if it is somehow injured or refuses to leave its companion.

Inspired by the work of  , who also drew a Megalodon escorted by smaller oceanic whitetips and by the work of paleoartist Alberto Gennari, whose work I referenced for the megalodon's pose.

And to add to the scene, music to emphasize the dread: www.youtube.com/watch?v=USGukR…

Also,  I ask kindly, please refrain from calling me "bruda". I dislike being called that nickname.

Sharing is caring^^ To think that those blue sharks are just as long as the meg's dorsal fin. This is really a huge shark.

Megalodon is definitely huge. This one I did here is also a particularly big one that's maximum size for her species. Those sharks all around her are about 10-12 feet each, and she's about maybe 65-70 feet long based on that.

wasn't it debunked at some point that they reached such sizes? I read that they stopped at 45 ft but could be mistaken. I guessed the other sharks around 5 to 10ft or so, like one sees them today mostly. Still adore the picture though

Saberrex In reply to M3tt1gel [2017-07-05 02:32:12 +0000 UTC]

The maximum size is believed to be around 65 to perhaps even 70 feet in an old one, based on the 7-8 inch teeth from the largest specimens. I've seen an 8-inch meg tooth once for sale in a gem, fossil and mineral show in Massachusetts. I can attest to the size of the animal that owned it. Also, those blue and oceanic whitetip sharks around the megalodon are the same as the ones we have today.

Any other info about this 8 inch tooth ? Was it confirmed to be that large ?
To my knowledge the largest tooth was found by Vito Bertucci and was 7 5/8 inches.

Hey Ovleg, do you think this scenario I wrote for an answer on Quora, is feasible or accurate? (I know Livyatan would have died a lot sooner than I suggest, but an just wanted to give it a fighting chance to make the battle more interesting).

I don't remember the seller's name, but the tooth was authentic and they had a ruler for size beside it. I think the asking price was 10K, but I'm not certain. It was many years ago that I saw it.

Ovleg In reply to Saberrex [2018-05-28 22:22:41 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. Can you were it was ?

Have you any guess about its width ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Saberrex In reply to Ovleg [2018-05-29 01:11:11 +0000 UTC]

It was very wide for sure, maybe almost 6-7 inches at the widest part of the root. I'm not sure of locality, though. It may have been Peruvian based on color, but it I never asked. Peru is a great spot for gigantic Meg teeth.

Ovleg In reply to Saberrex [2018-06-11 19:48:59 +0000 UTC]

Really ? Damn I wish there would be a picture.

So far one of the widest upper anterior tooth I know of is the one in Hubbell's collection, variously measured as 139-150 mm wide.

The width indicates the overall size of the tooth set which in turns indicates the overall size of the body in comparison with modern relatives (Leder et al. 2016).

Same. I wish I'd had my camera that day. And because I didn't have an iPhone at the time, I got no pictures at all. Either way, the size of the tooth indicated a shark of truly considerable, if not almost outlandish size.

Ovleg In reply to Saberrex [2018-07-26 12:38:27 +0000 UTC]

Damn are you really sure of that size ?

8 inchers are considered legendary among collectors usually. There was a ruler beside it you say ?

I study the species size since a decade. The biggest tooth I have details about is a 7.5 incher 6 inches wide from Peru described to me by paleontologist Craig Sundell.
A 8 incher, 6-7 inches wide monster would represent simply an uber uber monster.

Saberrex In reply to Ovleg [2018-07-27 00:43:29 +0000 UTC]

Pretty sure. I remember that ruler being there, as I said. It definitely was a monster.

Ovleg In reply to Saberrex [2018-07-27 06:23:07 +0000 UTC]

Somehow it makes sense.

Paleontologist Bretton Kent, one of the best megalodon experts by far, has examined thousands of meg teeth in his carreer, including Hubbell's big tooth 7.25-7.37 inches long, 5.5 inches wide. He said me the largest teeth he has measured directly were 173 mm in vertical height, meaning a slant length of 180-183 mm.

Yet the biggest monster tooth he has seen but couldn't measure is a Chilean in a private collection that "barely fit in a cigare box".

Such a tooth would obviously be a world record and bigger than the officially known record size teeth. Maybe that is the tooth you have seen.

It's possible that's the one I saw. Then again, I may never know.

Too bad you couldn't take a picture ! For now the biggest authentified from Peru is this one by Craig Sundell www.fossilguy.com/topics/megsi…

Did the tooth you see appears bigger in your souvenir ?

Saberrex In reply to Ovleg [2018-07-28 19:06:18 +0000 UTC]

Yes. It was bigger. Not by much, but definitely bigger.

Ovleg In reply to Saberrex [2018-07-29 17:50:58 +0000 UTC]

Impressive. Have you an experience with fossil sharks teeth ? Wasn't the tooth restored and perhaps stretched ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Saberrex In reply to Ovleg [2018-07-29 21:25:38 +0000 UTC]

I have plenty experience with fossil shark teeth. It wasn't restored, not like the two 4-inchers I have in my fossil collection that I got from JT of Sharksteeth.com. The 8-inch tooth I saw was whole and with mostly intact serrations. It was one of the finest specimens I've ever seen.

Ovleg In reply to Saberrex [2018-07-30 02:40:52 +0000 UTC]

Very exciting. Most shark teeth collectors would not believe you (they are always suspicious and see stretched teeth everywhere) but I do trust you.

And possibly near 7 inches wide ? A dinner plate ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Saberrex In reply to Ovleg [2018-07-30 05:29:10 +0000 UTC]

Pretty close to 7 inches wide, I'd say. I also heard about one that had been close to 9 inches via paleontologist George Blasing, but I think that one was certainly exaggerated. An 8-inch tooth I definitely know exists, for as I said, I saw it with my own eyes. But a 9-inch tooth? Not likely.

Ovleg In reply to Saberrex [2018-07-30 10:06:55 +0000 UTC]

I had asked Blasing about this years ago, it was allegedly found by Kansas students but only saw it in picture...

Would you say it reached 8 inch or exceeded it ?

Saberrex In reply to Ovleg [2018-07-30 16:41:32 +0000 UTC]

It may or may not. I can't say myself without seeing it in person.

Ovleg In reply to Saberrex [2018-07-30 21:46:19 +0000 UTC]

I've just listened a podcast by George Blasing.

He says to have seen the bottom of a broken tooth that was twice larger than the same part of a 5 incher he has...

Saberrex In reply to Ovleg [2018-08-03 15:21:58 +0000 UTC]

If that's true, then that would be a true monster.
