Description Of all the sharks in the sea, though the great white is my favorite, the shortfin mako is to me, the most beautiful. A living torpedo, this shark is not only fast and sleek, but also highly intelligent. They have good memories and fishermen describe these sharks as being vengeful when hooked, waiting for just the right moment to lash out at those they perceive as an enemy. In tests by biologist Craig Thorburn and photographer Mike Bhana, makos proved themselves capable of making decisions that indicate high intellect; when feeding at boats, they feel safe enough not to eye roll, expect to be handled while being offered food, can be briefly restrained without retaliating once they deem a diver unthreatening, and can even be fed by hand. While never able to work with the same sharks twice, Thorburn and Bhana's research shows that makos are highly intelligent, swift and deadly.

Wow, really well done!

You're getting better with each shark drawing.

I never actually noticed the coloration of Mako's, with dark blue on the top and grey-ish blue in the middle. I noticed that Tuna's and Blue sharks have the same thing. Greg's coloration also changed in the comic because I noticed how bleak he was.

I really want to make a Mako shark OC. Attacking a Sailfish or Tuna and show off his speed.

But to my surprise, when divers saved a Mako from a long line, the animal was pretty calm for the most part. Ofcourse you're gonna be carefull, because the poor thing is terrified. ;w;

Thank you. And about that mako, I bet it knew the divers were there to help. After all, it is intelligent enough to determine whether humans are friend or foe.

Amazing.

I would love to see a Mako up close, showing that I'm not a threat and making photos of it. That would the most awesome thing ever. <3

Agreed. It's too bad makos can't survive in captivity though, because I'd love to see how intelligent they might truly be if one was worked with for long periods.

There's so much we still don't know about them. And that's why I love sharks so much. ;w;

Same here. I also think someone should do intelligence tests at Guadalupe Island with great whites to see how intelligent they are, especially since the same individuals come back year after year.

I'd love to see that.

Perhaps make something for them to get food like they do with crows? But make it more simple for them to figure out. c:

Well, you can see the intelligence tests regarding the makos here:Β www.nzgeo.com/video/mako-swift… . This is the full documentary from when I saw it on Shark Week in 1999. Enjoy!

My favorite docu was walking with dinosaurs/sea monsters.

Those animals looked real.

You'd be surprised by how much more realistic the animals of the 3-part documentary "Ice Age Giants" look. They put the "Walking With" series to shame in regards of realism. If you don't believe that, see for yourself. Here's a clip from the first episode "Land of the Sabertooth" in this video at 1:30-153- Β www.youtube.com/watch?v=eue6Os…

The "Walking with" series was good, but Ice Age Giants has it beat. That 2013 BBC documentary was really good at portraying its animals realistically. You can't even determine that they're extinct at first glance. Also, here's the full episodes for your enjoyment: Β

Yet makos were in Deep Blue Sea

Saberrex In reply to Dinossword [2018-08-29 04:13:10 +0000 UTC]

They were indeed. Real makos however cannot be held captive. The longest one ever lasted in an aquarium was 5 days.

Given open water sharks drop dead when placed in captivity.

But how would Bull sharks contain in captivity?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Saberrex In reply to Dinossword [2018-08-30 00:25:15 +0000 UTC]

Not all of them. Oceanic whitetips do surprisingly well in captivity, as do whale sharks. Blue have survived in captivity until bull sharks were added, during which the bulls ate them. The record for them is almost a year. As for bull sharks themselves, they can and do quite well in captivity when given the proper enclosure. The largest bull shark in captivity is held in an aquarium in the USA from what I remember as well.Β

Saberrex In reply to Dinossword [2018-08-30 02:33:10 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. Long, dog-bone shaped tanks with large rock outcroppings will make it easier for open water sharks to be held in captivity as those obstacles are easier to avoid and allow them to expend far less energy.Β
