Description An in-progress picture of my unfurred wolf mask. all the details like the eyes, jaws, teeth, and nose were handcrafted by me.

After seeing all these tutorials on how to make masks all over DeviantArt, I decided to give it a try myself.

The nose and teeth are made of sculpey clay, the gums are made from two pink balloons that were painted, along with ordinary nail polish over them to give them a shine.
The eyes are made from fish bowl gems (will post an tutorial on how to make realistic looking eyes for under $5 )

Wow, neat... reminds me much of the mask I just made, except mine didn't have a jawset or jaw articulation.
Awesome!

Eep! sorry this took so long to get back to you
Ok, first off I would study pictures of wolf skulls, heads and teeth. Then I would get a $5 plastic mask, lots of newspaper, a batch of no-dry clay, and I recommend getting some hinges from Monoyosha's website. are you familiar with her? she has some good quality hinges for masks that are $10, an exacto knife, broad cloth elastic bands, hot glue gun and glue sticks, clear super glue, along with relatively cheap but realistic looking noses, eyes, and jawsets if you don't want to make your own.
Now here are the step by step instructions:
1. with the exacto blade, enlarge the eyeholes of the plastic mask slightly
2. get the plastic mask and the no bake clay. Mold the snout and other wolfish details onto the plastic mask using pictures of wolf heads as references. Don't make the snout too long (or too short) you can use the picture of my wolf mask base as a reference for size and length. be sure to check that everything is not crooked and is perfectly symmetrical and don't be afraid to take your time with this.
3. apply several layers of the paper mache over the clay, let dry until solid, and remove it off the clay
4. remove all of the clay off the plastic mask.
5. hot glue the paper mache snout and details onto the plastic mask.
6. attach the hinges, and make sure everything is straight and not crooked.
7. with the blade, carefully and making sure everything is straight and symmetrical, cut the mask in two sections, the upper face, and the lower jaw, again using references of the wolf skull as a reference for where to cut.
8. remove the stringy elastic band from the mask, adding the new broad elastic band on it. it will make the mask feel more secure on your head.
9. now try on the mask and try moving your mask mouth and checking for mistakes. if you're having trouble getting it to move because your chin doesn't have enough contact with the bottom jaw of the mask, add some padding of some kind and that should do the trick also, if there are some sharp points that are bugging you, you can either use the exacto blade to cut them off or add padding.
10. stick the teeth set on the jaws. I would tape them on first instead of glueing first so if you need to adjust them you can move the teeth around as needed. put on the mask and move your mouth, and check to see if the teeth align right. when you have the right fit, go ahead and glue them on
11. glue the nose on the snout.
12. you can either add fake eyes on the mask or just use your own eyes though eyeholes. Getting the eyes to look right without impeding your vision is rather difficult and if you're having trouble with them, it may be better to just use your own eyes. What I did was I left a lot of space in the tear duct for vision and used black mesh to disguise the hole. Then I got clear and round fish bowl gems that you can buy in the pet store section I got a piece of white paper, drew an iris, and used clear super glue to glue it to the back of the fish bowl gem and it creates a net 3D effect and looks like a very realistic eye. Then I carefully glued the eyes on the mask, making sure everything looks straight and that the eyes aren't crooked or do not impede my tear duct vision.
13. and finally your mask base is done, now you can add on fur or other details
14. Have fun!

Amazing! And it looks like you didn't use any casting or anything. Is the base all paper mache and metal hinges? I'm trying to make a movable mask for a class project. Any advice? Thanks! Appreciate it!

Thank you and sorry for the late reply! The paper mache is added over a $5 blank mask for stability since the paper mache can be a little too flexible. You can buy the blank mask at any hobby lobby or other craft shop. The hinges were made out of stiff plastic utensils, but I know of one maskmaker who sells pre-made hinges on her website that are better than the ones I used and they don't cost very much. I think her DA name is Monoyosha, you might have heard of her. My one suggestion as you make the mask, is that you take as much time as you need to make sure everything is perfectly proportioned and that the jaws line up just right. It can be hard to get the jaws lined up straight and not crooked. Hope this helps!

Thanks so much! You have great timing, don't worry. I just started building this week. I hope my hinges work, that's the only thing I'm really worried about! I appreciate the advice!!!

I do love seeing wip's, there's something just very fascinating about seeing a drawing come to life before your very eyes.
Also it's an interesting idea you had with the eyes, never thought about using fish bowl gems before lol.
The effect is quite nice though

Thank you I was surprised by how easy (and cheap) it was to make the eyes and make them look realistic. I hope to post a tutorial soon on how to make them so that other people can enjoy them as well

Is there enough room to see throug the corners of the eyes?

SabrePanther In reply to poisonmilow [2011-07-19 01:57:09 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I can actually see quite clearly, although I can only see straight ahead of me since some of my peripheral vision is blocked

Tear duck vision is a killer like that. But the effect is so nice cause of how well it hides the holes.
